bocephus I didnt grow my cabbage either back when we would do 250 pounds. We could buy it so cheap it wasn’t worth growing. Now that I only do 50 pounds, and with prices going up on everything, I started growing it.

kyle Just go for it. Try to get some crowns or roots from a friend or neighbor. The rest will take care of itself. HR kind of has a mind of its own. I think you may still have some time UP North to get it in this year. and have a good start for next year and then put another crown/root in in the spring. HR loves that Wisconsin weather, so does garlic. I grew up in the Village of West Milwaukee and we always had HR and garlic in our garden.

Bob Stehlik the old timers here used to say you could harvest HR in any month ending in “R”. Have found that to be about the best time to dig. Do some every year. Much better than the store stuff.

wdaly I have heard that as well. I usually dig some of mine out in late SeptembeR to mid OctobeR. In November & December the ground may be frozen and it could be under a couple of inches of snow. In the past I’ve dug up some pencil sized roots in the Spring for Easter meals, but it doesn’t seem to have the potency of the Fall roots.

kyle I used a larger, about a 3 gal plastic pot to contain the root. If you have a larger barrel size you can plant more roots together. You don’t want to let the roots to spread into the rest of the garden but want the HR to have enough room to grow. I have to agree with the other s that it is dang near impossible to kill.

RON PARRISH just checked out that North Spore page. Interesting stuff. Think I might give it a try as well. Just not sure I have time for another hobby. But most of the methods they show appear to be pretty low maintenance after the initial set up. Thinking maybe a mono tub or log. I’ve done the box kits before.
