How do you store your grinder plates and knives so they stay together as paired? I use butchers twine, but thought there has to be a better way, so is there a better way? I don’t like plastic bags since moisture can get trapped inside and cause corrosion. Thought about vacuum sealing them which could work, what do you think?

mrobisr I store them individually in storage bags after spraying them with food grade silicone first once they are fully dry after cleaning. Of course one set, usually the 3/8" on the beast & 1/8" on the little guy stay on the machines.

I use butcher’s twine as well. I spray with a food grade silicone and just let them hang. No issues so far.

PapaSop No issues with using that type of spray either. Read about using the spray about 2 years ago and been happy since. I thank all for the life hacks.

Does this mean I should quit using WD-40 when storing my knives and plates?!😉

processhead The only reason I used food level “WD40” is it’s closer to me after washing/drying the pieces/parts. There’s no reason you can’t use WD40 because I always wash the parts before each grind to make sure there’s no germ issues when I grind. I’m smiling with you.

WD-40 is basically the Wonder Drug of our generation.
            Use it on everything!
Although, have not tried it in a drink. 🤔😁😂🤣

If you can’t fix a problem with WD-40, duct tape, or baling wire, well, there’s no hope for you.

I use zip lock bags with the silicone packs in them after they are dry.
Bread ties are a great idea too to keep them still when they are moved in the drawer but still, in a bag…

Wait… are you guys saying you pair a separate knife with each grinder plate and keep them as a pair?

I’ve been using the same knife for all plates… is this not as good, what do I gain with a matched pair? And of course… what are good brand #22 knife to buy if you guys say pairs are better?

They wear on both plates and knives. By keeping them together they wear evenly. If you shared, one plate may be slightly warped on the outside and another plate could be warped on the inside. Since the blade is wearing unevenly, the cut it makes in the meat is like a bad pair of scissors. Best practice sharpen together, store together and use together.

Dave in AZ also I think if you have stainless plates you need stainless knives. But i really cant swear to it one of the vets here will probably jump in tomorrow.

PB blaster is like WD40, except it works WAY better. For squeaky doors and small stuff like that, WD works fine. But if you have stuck or rusted bolts, PB works way better. If you try it, you will never go back.

processhead thanks for posting a picture Paul. I was going to go out in the garage and take a pic and post it. I’m not smart enough to grab a photo off the web. Do you use it also? I know so many people who try it and never go back to anything else. I buy it by the case at the swap meet I go to in the fall. I even found a gallon of it which is nice, I can put it into anything from a squirt bottle to a syringe for doing ‘‘delicate’’ work

processhead thanks for posting a picture Paul. I was going to go out in the garage and take a pic and post it. I’m not smart enough to grab a photo off the web. Do you use it also? I know so many people who try it and never go back to anything else. I buy it by the case at the swap meet I go to in the fall. I even found a gallon of it which is nice, I can put it into anything from a squirt bottle to a syringe for doing ‘‘delicate’’ work

kyle I use it from time to time when I need to disassemble stuff that is frozen with corrosion or rust. Its’s good stuff, but a can last me quite a while.

I go through it probably because I have older equipment (dozer, backhoe, tractors) and I work on old cars.

For my own peace of mind, the wd40 and pb blaster thing is a joke. Only food grade oils/ sprays should be used on parts with food contact. Metal is porous and these protective coatings are designed to penetrate those pores and repell moisture. Simply washing the parts before using them, isn’t going to remove the harsh chemicals found in products like wd40. There would be no benefit to using them over a food grade product. Mineral oil, food grade equipment grease or food grade silicone spray is the safest bet.
