calldoctoday We had frost this morning and it was 32 degrees when I got up and about. The sun comes up around 5 am here so the temperature was probably lower last night. I was going to plant yesterday, but the rain took care of that and good thing. I’ll just wait a couple of days. Rest up and enjoy your bounty.

johnsbrewhouse Well, we could probably use just a bit of that too & kill off some of those bugs!

calldoctoday They live through it up here, mosquitos seem to thrive on the cold and the wasps just slow down. The wasps just coming out a couple of weeks ago. The neighbors bee’s have been busy for a couple of months.

johnsbrewhouse I understand. I went to Minnesota a few times & Wisconsin. Loved it & great fishing to help the work out, but I was shocked at how big the Musquitos were. They are still meaner in Louisiana & Texas, even though smaller. In Louisiana they really gang up on you though.

calldoctoday Ours are small too, just lots of them at certain times of the year. Our place in the hills we really have problems with them since the creek is right next to everything and we have standing water on the timber company property most of the year. Wife is allergic to the bites, they are allergic to me. They blow up and pop.

Hoping to get things going today. It’s 40 degrees this morning, snowing in the mountains and they just extended the ski season at one resort until the end of the month. Got to load gravel in the bottoms of the troughs and then the soil. Then everything should be ready to plant. The raised beds have been tilled, just need to be raked and weeds pulled out. I have my only crop, the cilantro that doesn’t seem to mind sub-freezing weather. Have to work the compost bin too, that’s where my pumpkins grow and it’s full of chickweed right now.IMG_0405.JPG

johnsbrewhouse This is my first year container gardening and I am seeing the success I had hoped for. Before my back going south I had the traditional garden and never had any problems, but this is different for sure. I am wondering now if I should add gravel in the bottom next time, what advice do you have?

I use the gravel to keep the soil from the drain hole along with the landscape fabric over the gravel. It give a place for the water to sit below the soil and the ability to drain without taking a whole lot of soil with it. It only take a couple of inches.

johnsbrewhouse Thank you I’ll try that on the fall garden and see if it fixes the problem.

cdavis Very nice. We have picked three big messes of green beans thus far. Two batches were relegated to a gallon or so of leather britches & another went into the pot with some new cream taters & bacon. Another on the way tomorrow that we will eat. Usually do a swap between eating the very first batch & preserving (drying, freezing, canning) every other batch from that point until they wear out.

Winter onions coming in ready to eat. Then tomatoes are already making and blooming. Comparing to last year we got washed out and flooded garden killing over halve of it. Going to have some nice extra’s for meals this year looks like. Tx heat is starting to get here, be in the high 80’s and 90 from now on. The small okra plants will grow fast now. Hope ya’ll have good luck to.
