Squirrels? I refer to them as tree rats. Don’t care for them. Have heard the tails are popular to those who are into fly tying.

Mepps will buy or trade them for fishing lures, etc… that they produce. They are located in Antigo, WI.

GWG8541 Even I have had squirell! I am betting they are the same as rabbit, you couldn’t survive on them from the lack of fat, aside form a neighborhood squirell.

They told everyone they were restoring the oak prairies when they did it. They drove all the animals off their natural habitat so now the scrounge for food and aren’t that fat.
Army or Air Force military? The AF folks always have a hidden agenda, the Army folks are just down right sneaky. LOL. Never ate squirrel brains but I have eaten a few things, rabbit eyeballs for one, that most haven’t. I don’t have too many food aversions. The reds and grey’s battle it out here, reds having the numerical advantage. My biggest nemesis here are the chipmunks. You would need to kill ten just to get an appetizer and you still wouldn’t have enough hide to make one mitten. With the reds and chipmunks they do a lot of damage here.
YooperDog Joint base adjoining Ft. Lewis and McChord AFB. I am a former military brat. My dad and mom were Army, my brother was a helicopter pilot in the AF, died in an aircraft accident in 87. My brother work for AAFES for 20 + years. I have live at both ends of the bases for over 35 years. True the Army is very sneaky about what they do, the prairie restoration is for the Oregon Oak tree which is endangered, yet they do prescribed burns on the prairie every 2 years that burns all the tree’s. It keep the training free of obstructions and stinks up our area. They burn during burn bans.

johnsbrewhouse I have flown out of McChord several times and did some training with the Army, airborne training, but it has been awhile. Flying is pretty unforgiving when things go wrong, not a lot of good options. Sorry hear about your brother. I have had to listen to and watch the black box recordings of friends/ squadron mates involved in an aircraft crash. I already knew the outcome but I kept hoping to hear something different.

Jonathon You know I have no idea, there just comes a point in the fat to meat ratio that isn’t ideal!

Jonathon The coyotes roam by most every night, they only come when the dogs are in. I can’t shoot them with the .22 pistol since their are houses now across the creek from my house. When I had my Wolfhounds they rarely traveled the back area near the creek because of the fear of the W/H’s size and access outside all night. My neighbors leave food out for cats all the time and wonder why they have racoons and rats visiting them every night.

Jonathon We have a village here that wants to take care of coyotes and they wonder where there cats and small dogs are disappearing to.

bocephus The problem is the coyotes are part of the natural ecosystem. They clean up the roadkills and other dead animals usually. The only time they really hunt small cats and dogs is when they are pushed out of their natural environment or lured out by humans feeding them on purpose or unknowingly by leaving things out. They can be trapped or snared fairly easy since they follow the same paths all the time. Most of the ones we have are night hunters now, not wanting to be exposed to harm during the day.

johnsbrewhouse We have seen a few on our game cameras the last couple of years, if I see one during the day he’ll be gone.

bocephus Don’t get me wrong, I will shoot them or snare them as well, we have a bounty on them here to control the population. They are scavengers and don’t roam really large areas in order to find food unless they are starving, then they prey on what they can get, cats and small dogs look just like small game.

Finally was able to make some jelly. I have had these in the freezer for 2 years. 12 half pints of chokecherry jelly and 7 pints of chokecherry syrup. Still have about 4 gallons of chokecherries left and 2 gallons of sand plums. Just ran out of time today.

ND Mike I love chokecherry syrup, my mom used to make it for me, now I have a wonderful sister in law who gives me a pint every year for Christmas. It is from my mom’s recipe.

bocephus I grew up eating it on some white bread drizzled with some heavy cream! So good. We called it cowboy bread. It is amazing on ice cream too!!!

ND Mike I hoard mine, don’t even share much with my wife. Use it on waffles and pancakes but thought it would be great on ice cream.
