wdaly just saw the picture. Wow that was a heck of a hail storm. Hopefully the garden was the only thing damaged.

RON PARRISH looks good and healthy. Does it produce a lot? My winę caps have been pretty prolific. I have at least 4 gallons of dried so far and still have more coming in. I like mushrooms but this one has gotten out of hand a bit, just might have to send some to Jonathon to make some room.

Your discussion on lids had me thinking to my Mom back when she was canning. I know she used the modern rings and lids but she also had some really old time metal metal screw-on lids with a white glass insert on the inside and you used them with a rubber gasket between the lid and the jar.
Anyone else remember those old style canning lids?

YooperDog Most of those were made with zinc bands. Softer than other metals, but not lead is my understanding.

Chef That makes more sense. The whole cap is one piece with I guess a rubber gasket insert. The caps are pretty soft, always washed my hands after handling them.

wdaly Ugh!!! I am hoping to get some tomatoes before the frost. It is always a battle between the weather and wild life. First round of peppers were stole by the chipmunks and now it is the battle with the ripening tomatoes.

RON PARRISH i have a 3x5 area laid out on the N side of a forested area and another at my mother’s place, put that one in about a month or so later. Mine has crazy prolific, hers is a little more sporadic, maybe because of weather, same bed construction and a little smaller. A pretty mild flavored mushroom.

processhead I have some too, but we just put dry stuff in them as the gaskets pretty much wore out long ago. They are nice & interesting.

It’s finally raining here, our first measurable rain in almost four months. Not normal for Western Washington where moss is our state flower.
