Gardening, canning, pickling and everything related

kyle I used a larger, about a 3 gal plastic pot to contain the root. If you have a larger barrel size you can plant more roots together. You don’t want to let the roots to spread into the rest of the garden but want the HR to have enough room to grow. I have to agree with the other s that it is dang near impossible to kill.

I am on my third mushroom flush in the last three weeks. I am going to have to start dehydrating because I can only give away and consume so much. I already have another batch coming up and the second patch has yet to produce. I started the second patch about a month after the first.

YooperDog those look great. Nice yield. Did you say those were wine caps?

My hr patch -
Surg yes wine caps, the tops remain burgundy. Fresh they have a slight taste of asparagus. When I cook them up they pick up the flavors I cook them in

My hr patchRON PARRISH nice HR patch. The first time I grew them I knew nothing about them. By the third year they were out of control in our garden and I started doing some learning.

So, my wife and I talked yesterday and we decided that despite what the HOA says we are doing a garden next year. We might try a vertical like someone posted something on here a while ago…actually let me find that. I can’t find it, it was an image that someone had built a wooden structure with pots sort of built into it.

Jonathon I had built that. You could also consider container gardening. Have Austin’s brother in law get you some used Protein tubs and use them for your containers.

Tex_77 Can you do a post on it at some point? That might be the way my wife and I go to prevent a nosey neighbor from saying something to the Board

Jonathon Use water tanks (horse troughs) that’s what I am converting a lot of my things to. I don’t have to bend over, they hold moisture better and most HOA’s can’t prohibit a large flower pot. I had a friend in Sacramento whose entire driveway was his garden in pots including fruit trees. It was very productive.

This may be of intrestRON PARRISH Looks beautiful, but how long will it last. I have been trying to figure out for years what would be the perfect raised bed situation that is durable, relatively inexpensive, relatively simple to build, last a long, long time, & makes gardening a lot of fun all the time. I am not sure I have found the perfect answer either & I am for the most part sill doing it the way I have for the past over 50 years, unfortunately.

Surg I Googled “Uses for HR leaves”; and yes they are edible. They can be blanched, sautéed, chopped and used in a couple of other ways. Surprised me that they are edible!

Jonathon We have used Earthboxes for the last 7/8 years or so. We grow tomatoes, basil, green beans, peppers and cukes. They water from the bottom and here in Colorado we can move them if it hails. They have casters on the bottom. Our soil is very sandy so we only plant our garlic, onions, squash, HR & dill in the actual garden. In the Fall we put the spent soil in the garden and store the Earthboxes in the shed. We have a total of 6 and they produce a lot of produce for the 2 of us. Extra benefit is- NO WEEDING!

RON PARRISH They run about $50 each, but we’ve had ours for 7/8 years and they have held up great. We bought a few each year to lower the initial total cost. The more we used them; the more we learned to use them efficiently.

Canned 13 quarts of green beans today. It was way to hot and smoky to do anything outside today. We have a forest fire on the other side of the mountains now pushing the smoke over. Need to pick more beans, that will have to wait until tomorrow morning.
