So I went out on the hardwater today and caught one perch! It wasn’t even a keeper!!! Marked fish all day on the vexilar and they just didn’t want to cooperate today no matter what you threw at them! But Austin would be proud, this was my snack!

The deer I was out hunting didn’t show up, but this cull buck made a mistake by walking out. We aged him by his bottom jaw at 4.5, so he really needed to be culled out. I am turning the entire son of gun into ground burger meat.

HerbcoFood that’s a lot of burger, not saving any steaks or roasts?

HerbcoFood You guys are amazing at being able to tell the age in a split second while your trigger finger is going crazy and twitching. I don’t hunt. But, see many deer fairly close to me. I applaud you guys for being that skilled.

YooperDog When I debone it I will see how much it weighs, but we eat at least a 1lb a week of ground venison.

zbigjeff Yeah, it takes a lot of research of looking at photos of deer. Then also discussing with others on their thoughts. But of course aging is very regional, a 4.5 year old in the area of Texas I hunt will look nothing like a 4.5 year old corn fed Iowa deer. It is difficult at times, it is also fun having those discussions.

Also note that the actual aging of a deer doesn’t take place till it’s down. The wear of the teeth on the lower jaw is what determines the age of the deer.

On a buck you can get an approximation of its age by observation of the animal’s physique.

Like most male humans, a buck’s body progressively fills out as it ages, assuming good health and diet.

Austin they hit the spot! They have jalapeño powder in them. They actually had a nice amount of heat.

HerbcoFood Thanks for the recap. I knew you guys were good. But, the age is more accurately determined after the cull. Now, I know more. See, if a person wants to know more about meat processing from the beginning till the table, this is a very good site. Introduced 5 others to the site in the last 2 weeks and they said the same thing. Yay for all of us.
