ND Mike said in Gardening, canning, pickling and everything related:

Finally was able to make some jelly. I have had these in the freezer for 2 years. 12 half pints of chokecherry jelly and 7 pints of chokecherry syrup. Still have about 4 gallons of chokecherries left and 2 gallons of sand plums. Just ran out of time today.

That’s quite a bit of work. We have chokecherry trees and sand plums all over the place around here. We used to make wine and jam out of them, some good stuff, but a lot of work.

YooperDog my son is interested in getting his hands on some Chokecherries to make wine. Its something we have never tried, but sounds like it would be good.

GWG8541 this year wasn’t a banner season for them here, there were still plenty. I think a late spring frost did some damage. Birds like them and they will stain anything they land on. Like jam and syrup, wine is a bit tedious, need to get rid of the pits. It will take some tweaking to get the flavor profile you like. I would suggest doing one gallon batches to work your way there.

YooperDog so are chokecherry seeds poisonous? If so, how are you all processing the fruit?

GWG8541 the seeds are. If you break them they release a form of cyanide. They are tough though. I have never broke them. I just use a potato masher to smash up the berries.

Yup that pit is pretty hard, probably break a tooth first. You really don’t want the seeds in your fermentation. ND Mike said. They will stain things up a bit and they are pretty tart.

ND Mike Just a little fact, most fruit seeds in the prunus family which includes cherries and peaches have pits that contain small or trace amounts of cyanide. Even almonds have trace amounts of the basic element of cyanide. It was bred out of them, Wild almonds contain enough to kill.

Shoveled more snow then it should be allowed by law and for that reason when I graduated from University I relocated to a place that rarely see snow and never has enough accumulation to own a snow shovel

ND Mike Just a little fact, most fruit seeds in the prunus family which includes cherries and peaches have pits that contain small or trace amounts of cyanide. Even almonds have trace amounts of the basic element of cyanide. It was bred out of them, Wild almonds contain enough to kill.

johnsbrewhouse I heard that apple seeds also contain trace amounts for cyanide. Do you know anything about this?
