Yup that pit is pretty hard, probably break a tooth first. You really don’t want the seeds in your fermentation. ND Mike said. They will stain things up a bit and they are pretty tart.

GWG8541 the seeds are. If you break them they release a form of cyanide. They are tough though. I have never broke them. I just use a potato masher to smash up the berries.

ND Mike Just a little fact, most fruit seeds in the prunus family which includes cherries and peaches have pits that contain small or trace amounts of cyanide. Even almonds have trace amounts of the basic element of cyanide. It was bred out of them, Wild almonds contain enough to kill.

Dude, you may have heard that I was born and raised in Northern Canada, right? Coldest I’ve ever experienced was -65C. Shoveled more snow then it should be allowed by law and for that reason when I graduated from University I relocated to a place that rarely see snow and never has enough accumulation to own a snow shovel

So basically you started your cruiser in the morning, put it on full blast heat and never turned off the cruiser (and limited the number of citations and chitchat on the side of the road LOL!!!)

Apple seeds contain 0.6 mg of hydrogen cyanide per gram. Technically (according to Dr. Google), this means that a person would have to eat 83–500 apple seeds to develop acute cyanide poisoning.

On a personal note, I grew up poor so I’ve always went by the principle that “if I paid for it and it is edible then I will eat it”. I have been eating the whole apple (minus the stem) for 40 years and I am not dead yet… and do eat plenty apples

Chef it does contain the compound that releases cyanide but not in quantities enough to do harm to humans. It is the same for most seeds in the Peach/Prune and Cherry families. It takes a lot to poison someone unless they are sensitive to the compounds

Dr_Pain I remember in the 60’s, there was a Doctor that talked about a natural defense against cancer, that of cyanide. He suggested, if memory is correct, that people should eat 2 apples a day including the seeds to prevent most forms of cancer.

I have no idea if this has any scientific basis to it, haven’t heard anything since.

The recommendation is obviously FALSE!, but I will tell you why without boring you too much. Cyanide and its precursors which ingested and reacted turns into Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) are NEUROTOXIC. This means it affects nerves in their abilities to transmit and receive information. If it was hemolitic, radiologic, chemolitic or myolitic (in muscles) then I could see value in researching but you cannot make me believe that affecting the nerves surrounding or within a cancer mass would eradicate that nasty stuff.

Actually John, if your stomach acid is strong enough to pierce through the seed coat or testa, the digestive enzymes will make good work to make the cyanide compound bioavailable to be converted. BUT we are splitting seeds LOL!

I agree with you that an intact and undigested seed is harmless, more harmless than an unwashed apple for sure (pesticides, herbicides, waxes, fecal matter etc…)

So basically you started your cruiser in the morning, put it on full blast heat and never turned off the cruiser (and limited the number of citations and chitchat on the side of the road LOL!!!)

Dr_Pain yeah pretty much! The whole day was spent responding to motorist assists. Lots of jelled up semis that day.

ND Mike Dr_Pain I know ther are plenty of people on here from the real cold country. In 32 years of working my first LE career, my coldest was -25 in January of 94, with a wind chill of about -50. I was as SWAT supervisor and told the wife before going to bed, we will probably have a SWAT call out tonight. Unfortunately, I was right and got a call about midnight. It was the coldest I can ever remember being in my life. Being in a stationary position all night was insane when I look back at it. We also found out that our launched gas rounds would not work in those temperatures. Our grenadier was launching rounds from about 30 feet away from the suspects house and trying to put them into a second story window. They never even made it to the house, let alone through the window. When we called the manufacturer and asked if it was a bad lot of ammo, they said " well we have never tested them in those temperatures before", which is ironic considering they were headquartered in a state near North Dakota. Im glad we only had to operate in those temps occasionally. Hats off to doing it on a regular basis. Stay safe this winter.
