ND Mike I hoard mine, don’t even share much with my wife. Use it on waffles and pancakes but thought it would be great on ice cream.

Finally was able to make some jelly. I have had these in the freezer for 2 years. 12 half pints of chokecherry jelly and 7 pints of chokecherry syrup. Still have about 4 gallons of chokecherries left and 2 gallons of sand plums. Just ran out of time today.

That’s quite a bit of work. We have chokecherry trees and sand plums all over the place around here. We used to make wine and jam out of them, some good stuff, but a lot of work.

GWG8541 this year wasn’t a banner season for them here, there were still plenty. I think a late spring frost did some damage. Birds like them and they will stain anything they land on. Like jam and syrup, wine is a bit tedious, need to get rid of the pits. It will take some tweaking to get the flavor profile you like. I would suggest doing one gallon batches to work your way there.

GWG8541 the seeds are. If you break them they release a form of cyanide. They are tough though. I have never broke them. I just use a potato masher to smash up the berries.

Yup that pit is pretty hard, probably break a tooth first. You really don’t want the seeds in your fermentation. ND Mike said. They will stain things up a bit and they are pretty tart.

ND Mike Just a little fact, most fruit seeds in the prunus family which includes cherries and peaches have pits that contain small or trace amounts of cyanide. Even almonds have trace amounts of the basic element of cyanide. It was bred out of them, Wild almonds contain enough to kill.

ND Mike Just a little fact, most fruit seeds in the prunus family which includes cherries and peaches have pits that contain small or trace amounts of cyanide.
