cdavis It seems a shame that they are just disposing of these but I understand with the population explosion they have to do what ever they can to try and keep them under control.
bocephus I felt the same as you for awhile. Then in 1 night a group of them destroyed my 40 acre hay meadow. It took a week of discing and dragging to get it back half way smooth. It is still rougher than it was and the grass still hasn’t fully recovered. So now it’s personal.

JohnG5 my neighbor just trapped and disposed of these last week.
I would have processed a few of these but the temp. was in the mid 90s. I’ll have plenty of chances when the weather cools a bit. -
JohnG5 I love to eat wild hogs but I won’t butcher any with the temperature in the mid 90s. It will be cooling off soon then it’s game on.

cdavis I understand the damage they do and am not blaming anyone for doing what ever it takes to try and control them.

From what I have been reading the larger wild pigs are not far removed from being domesticated. Why would any breed these or have them as pets?
JohnG5 these wild hogs I don’t think could ever be domesticated. About 5 years ago we caught 2 of them about 40lbs apiece and penned them up to tame and fatten em up. After 90 days they didn’t gain much weight and were as wild as the day we caught em.

Larry Jarma on the frontlines in fight against feral hogs
Fighting the war on feral hogs, future Meatgistics Podcast guest Larry Jarma designs and builds custom traps for farmers fighting the infestation. A resident of Texas, he is part of the effort to control feral hog populations.
According to Texas Parks & Wildlife, wild hogs have exploded in population. The increase in the population of feral hogs in the United States increased from 2.4 million in 1982 to 6.9 million in 2016. Texas alone is estimated to be the home for 2.6 million wild hogs.
“I have been fighting the feral hog battle all my life,” Jarma said. “That’s why I designed and used to build custom traps for my ranchers at an affordable price they could afford just so they could try and help alleviate the problem!!!”
The traps he builds are integrated with smartphone technology so farmers and ranchers can monitor their property from the comfort of their homes. In feral hog circles, Jarma’s name speaks for itself.
“I am one of the foremost trappers of feral hogs around,” he said. “I custom build high-end sophisticated smartphone traps so farmers and ranchers can trap hogs while watching their flat screen in their living room!!!”
Texas Parks & Wildlife estimates that the cost to take control measures of feral hogs in the United States is $2.1 billion annually. The population growth of feral pigs is estimated at 18 to 21 percent annually.
Jarma’s corral traps are considered to be the most effective trapping method for feral hog population control. Using camera technology, like the traps Jarma designs, greatly increases the efficiency and lowers the cost of using corral traps and feral hog population control.

ND Mike I agree. I knew that there was a problem with hog population in the south, but I didn’t know it was like that. That’s worse than our rut in Kansas and all the time.
JohnG5 I am glad we at least have an open season on them, no bag limit and can shoot them day or night.

ND Mike it was 49 total. That’s the most I ever saw trapped at 1 time. I didn’t think we would ever get them all hauled off.

HerbcoFood thank goodness it’s the same way here since most are nocturnal now. We do have to apply for a night shoot permit but it’s easy to get and if you’re in a group only 1 person has to have a permit.
