Your discussion on lids had me thinking to my Mom back when she was canning. I know she used the modern rings and lids but she also had some really old time metal metal screw-on lids with a white glass insert on the inside and you used them with a rubber gasket between the lid and the jar.
Anyone else remember those old style canning lids?processhead my mom still has a few jars like that. Even has one I swear is a lead screw top.

cdavis The off brands have really caused me much problems. My loss is at the point that without name brand lids, I will not can. When I see them in the store, I stock up. Keep about a gross of each on hand all the time.
My guess is that there may have been a size problem or some kind of metal that expanded beyond normal causing it to do what you showed. It could have been other things, but regardless, you now have waste. So sorry you had to deal with this.
Chef thanks. Live and learn they say.

YooperDog Most of those were made with zinc bands. Softer than other metals, but not lead is my understanding.

cdavis Usually this time of year I’m watching for frost. Last week we had a 40 minute hail storm. Not much left from my garden. May get a few more tomatoes.

wdaly that’s too bad. It’s awfully late in the year for hail. But the weather has been crazy this year. Hope you get more tomatoes

wdaly just saw the picture. Wow that was a heck of a hail storm. Hopefully the garden was the only thing damaged.

finally got my first flush of oyster mushrooms!RON PARRISH looks good and healthy. Does it produce a lot? My winę caps have been pretty prolific. I have at least 4 gallons of dried so far and still have more coming in. I like mushrooms but this one has gotten out of hand a bit, just might have to send some to Jonathon to make some room.

Anyone else remember those old style canning lids?processhead here is a picture of one of mine. It’s from Ball and says made for a zinc cap.

YooperDog No need to terrorize me with Mushrooms! Maybe I do need to give them another try though?

Chef That makes more sense. The whole cap is one piece with I guess a rubber gasket insert. The caps are pretty soft, always washed my hands after handling them.
