I posted this before, but here it is again if anyone is interested

    Dill Pickles,
4 qts water, 3 cups vinegar, 1 cup canning salt, 1 tsp Alum, 5 or 6 crushed bay leaves.
Boil all ingredients above, pack cucumbers into HOT jars, add dill and table spoon of minced garlic or whole garlic clove. Ladle boiling liquid into jars, wipe off top of jar and put HOT lid on. For hot dills, I add cayenne powder. Makes about 8 quarts . I use straight 8 cucumbers and pick them when they will fit into the jars without cutting them, and I don’t water bath them. Just make sure everything is HOT. This keeps them very crisp. This is how my family has done it for generations. One more tip is use not only the dill head, but use the steam also. Let sit for at least 6 weeks, I like to let them go for 6 months

Do you all find one strain of cukes better to use for dills than an other?
I love the chrisp snap of a spicy dill. I make bread and butters.

@dennyo I like national pickeling cucumbers 🥒. They seem to stay more crisp. Also to me they have a better flavor even raw. And I eat alot of raw cucumbers. Again just my opinion.

lkrfletcher I feel your pain, I definitely would have let at least of few expletives fly. To add insult to injury, you have to clean it up, buy new jars and new shelving.

lkrfletcher Sorry you had that happen. I’ve been there before. It is so easy to underestimate the total weights as you accumulate jars. I began to realize it when I would put 12 filled quarts back into the box the jars came in. First time I picked one up I started to build new shelves.

Keep in mind that a gallon, with jars, will weigh around 15 pounds or so.

I built a separate shelving unit for canning jars and cook books. The weight is way more than normal shelfing could take.

GWG8541 I harvested my garlic yesterday, 6/16. It’s been really hot here in Colorado and the bottom 1/3 of the leaves were turning brown. I plant it in late September and usually harvest it around Father’s Day but it was starting to lay down from the heat. This year we only planted 9 varieties, in years past we have planted as many as 20+ varieties.Garlic 2021 (3).jpg Garlic 2021 (4).jpgGarlic 2021 (6).jpg

Bob Stehlik Just now catching up with you guys. Dug the garlic today. Some was a little small so will plant them this fall. Good quantity though.PXL_20210715_214738395.jpg
