Well I had to make the chicken schnitzel up today so I could use up some leftovers from the day before. The lady of the house says that she is going to do a diet program which means we… So I guess we are going to do some clean eating for awhile and then into this Keto thing, I have a book explaining it to me, boldly I go.

Haven’t decided on the adult beverage yet, better hurry before I have to go cold turkey.

Chef FAT_BOB knows duck fat… He even pickles duck eggs in beer. He may be a source for the fat

In 2007 we planted an oak tree in our back yard to celebrate buying our house and starting our family. We’ve called it the Family Tree ever since. Now, as my former softball player wife (who would kill me if I posted a picture of her on here so shhhhhh) works with the boys on their batting, underneath the Family Tree, I’m cooking dinner for the family using a fire made entirely of wood taken from the very same family tree. It feels kinda cool to me. Sorry if my stories bug anyone. To me the story is important and kinda defines the food…

YooperDog I feel your pain. The wife gave me the same talk starting tomorrow. Tonight was reverse seared grilled pork chops and Ceasar salad with tomatoes. The adult beverage was a Gold Rush. 20210502_222314.jpg 20210502_222352.jpg 20210502_222720.jpg

GWG8541 nice looking chops, hoping to get the grill going soon to cook up some ‘lean’ meat.

JoeB I think I will need to pencil it in on the new approved foods list, hopefully she won’t notice.

JoeB if I remember correctly the Ranger bar was basically a box of cereal compressed into the size of a Hot Pocket. Take all day to eat it, better drink a lot of water, or else. I think I can remember the Beans & Weenies, but for sure remember the scrambled eggs and ham in a can, that just wasn’t right. A chunk of yellow with pink speckles. Most of the stuff wasn’t to bad, but there were some you couldn’t give away.

YooperDog They ALL needed Tabasco!! We used to have someone send us a case of the small bottles, just a couple of ounces. Made a big difference. I used to stir the cheese into the C-Rats Beans & Franks and then crumble in the crackers and with a little Tabasco you almost had a chili. I used to have a C-Ration cookbook from when I was in SE Asia in 68’-69’. It had all different combinations to make. They still had free cigarettes back them, Lucky Strikes, Pall Malls and Camels. A lot of bartering going on for the cigs, t.p. and chocolate.

Bob Stehlik the cigs were no longer in 78, but the tp was important to have. Smoking was still a pretty normal activity back then, by the time I retired, 2011, totally frowned on and they were looking to get you in a rehab program. Matches and the can opener were hot items, back then you could cook in your steel pot, not a good idea with the kevlar.

Most of the stuff wasn’t bad. Some looked a bit nasty, but usually smelled worse. Yes with a little ingenuity you could have a tasty meal. I grew up in a household of 12 of Eastern European descent so you ate what was being served and we didn’t waste food. Going to McDs was a big thing.

YooperDog https://meatgistics.waltonsinc.com/user/bob-stehlikBob Stehlik, You were close. The Lone Ranger bar was the disk candy bar, crunchy, that was wrapped in shinny silver foil. Ham and eggs… RVN 68-69, we were enjoying c’s that were packed 1946. The green color of the cans was migrating into the eggs. When hungry you’ll eat just about anything with calories. This was the original Green eggs and Ham. The Cigarettes had a prominent effervescent turquoise mold patina. Could never get the LREP’s to hydrate. BTY, i was issued one of the 1st M16’s, not yet an A1. Colt made the barrel and receiver (shiny chrome bolt), and the stock was made by Mattel, the Toy Manufacturing Company.

JoeB Oh, the original Green Eggs and Ham seemed delish (NOT). Bet ya that it was something you didn’t search out for a LONG time when you couldn’t get it any longer. Sounded something like my dad could not eat when he got out of the navy (chipped beef on toast). It was the only thing he wouldn’t partake in when mom made it in regular life. Yikes!

JoeB YooperDog I still have several P-38 can openers from the C-rats. Have one on my key chain, 1 in each tackle box and a couple squirreled away in a safe place. A great memento of times gone by.
