Just an observation on distilled spirits in general and whiskeys in particular.
There seems like there is a huge effort by the distillers to come up with ever more flavors and variations of their products to try and get more people buying a bottle. I am sure many of you have noticed the trend in flavored vodka, rum, whiskey, etc. which I suspect is intended to get more women to drink distilled spirits.
The other thing I have noticed is a significant marketing effort directed at packaging and labeling of the newer products. Some of the labeling is very creative but unfortunately that tells you very little about the quality of what’s in the bottle. I can imagine a lot of the packaging/labeling may hook a new buyer for at least one bottle until the consumer finds out its not to his or her liking.

Anyone who has been around the last 50-60 years or so remembers when choices of everything distilled was much more limited compared to today. It’s a mixed blessing. In general, choice is good. 😁 Making the right choice can be a carp shoot. 😉

      That’s spot on.

Been in the business for close to forty years. Seems like everything now moves toward the sweeter the better. Full intention to hook women and young folks into the picture.

The new trend is cans. Virtually everyone is coming out with a product in cans. Easy to carry, easy to stash. There is a madness to this marketing technique.

      And it’s working… The numbers don’t lie. Cheers🥃

One more. Tequila! This has the biggest change. 20% more over the last couple years. This is huge.

      Margarita’s anyone😉

johnsbrewhouse I never doubted that it met the requirements Jack Daniels is a huge distillery that probably distills a variety of whiskeys at the same time and in the same season
More unusual is the statement of varieties on the bottle and published blend amounts:

“Jack Daniel’s Triple Mash is a blend of three straight Bottled-In-Bond whiskeys – 60% Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Rye, 20% Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and 20% Jack Daniel’s American Malt. Each expression is distilled in Lynchburg, Tennessee, in the same distilling season, aged to the stipulations of the Bottled in Bond Act, then blended and bottled at 100 proof. It’s a remarkable whiskey that can only be crafted by a complete distillery like Jack Daniel’s”.

glen They use the Bonded in Bottle Act as a marketing gimmick now trying to make their Mega product sound more superior to the smaller distillers now making their marks on the market with Whiskeys that are much finer than theirs. I was watching something the other night about distilling and saw one mega distiller going through one million pounds of corn a day.

Tex_77 I have been looking for that bottle from JD to add to the collection. I’ve also been searching for the 10 year they released this year. So far it’s a Unicorn.

glen when you can boast being the world’s best selling whiskey, you can afford to play with the blends a little. I remember a few years back when Jim Beam distillery lost barns to a fire and Jack Daniel’s distilled their brand to help them out. Jack is definitely an educational place to visit.

GWG8541 johnsbrewhouse I agree with you both
Much easier to bond these days with super distilleries and mega warehouses.
Never been a JD fan but I may try the Triple Mash, it should be very rye forward which I usually like.
Also looks like the price point is not out of sight

glen I am ussually not a high rye or straight rye fan, but I will pick that one up if I see it. As processhead has mentioned, there is a lot of interesting mixtures in the modern whiskey industry. Some good, some bad, but we can have a good time trying all of those crazy concoctions. So now I’m setting here trying to figure out what I will be pouring tonight.

Then after my daughters softball game we stopped at the local watering hole for a drink in cold air. I got a smoked rum old fashioned.

I’m kind of a tea toadler myself.

Then I guess I’ll have to get one for the house. I purchased this bottle for a very good friend that does me well as I also do for him. But he has the channels for the marine industry that can save me a bit of cash and I wish to reciprocate.

So I went on a whim based off the store managers suggestion.

Could I have done better?? I’m asking for the next time.

Denny O bourbon and whiskey in general is a lot like sausage. There are alot of different flavors and I’m sure just as many opinions as to which one’s are better. At the end of the day, it’s all a matter of personal preference. There are some really high priced bourbons I consider a waste of money. There are some less expensive ones that I personally prefer and taste a ton better than their more pricey counter parts. If you are looking for consistency in taste, then blended whiskeys and some small batches with good quality control are a great choice. When you get into single barrels, the taste can change quite a bit from batch to batch. I have had some higher priced single barrels that one bottle was good, but the next bottle from a different batch (barrel) I ended up using for mixed drinks.
Having said that, the Michter’s you have there is a good pour. There are plenty other labels out there that are really great pours also. You definitely did good with that bottle in my humble opinion.
