johnsbrewhouse Do you have a plan on what (if anything) to do with that? Let us know whatever you decide to do with it cause it seems awesome!

Jonathon To open it, I would have to retrieve the cork from inside the bottle. I’m sure it’s pretty well stuck after all these years. I thought of selling the bottle, but it may have come from my parents wedding. Both my parents were in the Army and were wed in Germany along with being assigned there from mid 1955-1960. I would be interesting to find the condition of the contents. I need to get the top back from my sister before I open it so I can re-fashion a new cork for the bottle.

johnsbrewhouse I have a device to open up wine bottles that sticks a needle into and through the cork, press a button to force CO2 into the bottle and out comes the cork. That way, I never have to worry about losing corks to the interior of the bottle.

One thing that makes me laugh about JD, is they can make it in the county without issue, but they are located in a dry county.

zbigjeff made a big mistake back about 28 years ago. I picked up a bottle if JD for a High School reunion and it was the 125th anniversary bottle. It was on the shelf at a liquor store for regular shelf price. 2 mistakes were made. 1 I opened it and 2 I gave the bottle away since I had not start collecting yet. It was also a painted label bottle. Ill blame it on being young and dumb. I do wish I would have pursued getting the other scenes of Lynchburg bottles. They are pretty cool and tell a story. I did pick these up in 2018 at the White Rabbit saloon. Im learning, just a bit slow.20210817_091532.jpg 20210817_091635.jpg 20210817_091746.jpg

GWG8541 I don’t think of them as an investment. I think more of the them as “what can I share or can I share something semi to rare with some buds?” To me, it’s more about the experience than making money. But, I don’t have a chasers mentality. I would rather taste them now. Rather than my family just ripping them open at my funeral without regard.

zbigjeff Jeff, my biggest issue is that the cork is probably stuck to the wall of the bottle. Mom had a crystal bottle (decanter) with serving glasses to that was still in the original box, never used. It must have been a wedding present, but it had cork sealing the crystal cap and it was stuck tight. I manage to free the cork from the decanter with lots of work, but the cork strips adhesive did come loose from the cap. Not a big deal, contact cement take care of that.

zbigjeff Also the cork may have dried out over the years and allowed air into the bottle
This is not always apparent, sometimes air is mingling even though the cork doesn’t leak the liquid

HerbcoFood that confused me on my first tour. I thought maybe it was colored water or something in the bottles at the White Rabbit store. When I asked, they explained that they only sold “collector’s bottles” there so it was OK because it is not intended to be opened??? I still get a kick out of that. I guess you learn not to bite the hand that feeds you. Especially when the hand has the largest selling whiskey brand in the world.

I guess I never had to worry about long term liquor storage LOL

                              This is from Distiller.com:
How to prevent (high ABV liquor) oxidation? Make sure to wet the cork every once in awhile, by resting your bottles horizontally for an hour or so. Once or twice a year should do the trick. You could also buy Parafilm to wrap around the seal of the bottle. It’s a plastic paraffin film, primarily used in laboratories for sealing or protecting vessels

Chef Yeah, I was never faced with that problem so I didn’t know!

zbigjeff Thank you for that info, never new that!

It’s a plastic paraffin film, primarily used in laboratories for sealing or protecting vessels

zbigjeff Also the cork may have dried out over the years and allowed air into the bottle
This is not always apparent, sometimes air is mingling even though the cork doesn’t leak the liquid

If I am not mistaken, the reason for storing wine bottles on their side is to keep the cork from drying out.

processhead that is exactly why they lie them on the side. Cork does dry out and beak down. The moisture keeps the pores of the bark swelled and moist. I have chosen to use synthetic corks on my meads for long term storage so I don’t have to lay them down and keep the sediment on the bottom.
