Jonathon The lower one looks like a Tarpon though. He will not mess with you, we have swum with them years & years ago when we used to dive down in Florida.
calldoctoday I take that back. I got a better look at his real mouth. I was seeing the wrong part. That is a big Gar, probably a Gator Gar. They used to have those in Texas & they were scary looking. I am not sure if they would mess with you though as I keep thinking they were vegetation eaters, even with those big teeth. You would think they would be fish eaters or maybe even turtle eaters.

Oh no they are meat eaters, but typically feed or live or very fresh dead bait. The big ones are alligator gars and from the gills up you cannot tell the difference between the fish and the gator. Down the road from me in the Brazos river they go out at night with lights on the sand bars and shoot them with bow and arrow with Clorox jugs much like the barrels on the movie jaws. When we would get bored because the game fish was off we would take a hook and put a minnow on then tie a 4" piece of trot line string to the hook and unravel it so that when the gar would bite the minnow it’s teeth would get tangled in the string thus we had a fight on our hands. They are very good to eat, but a pain to clean, so we would release them to fight another day.
We swam in all of our rivers and the only incident that I have ever heard of was my dad dragging his hand in the water while running lines and one snapped at his hand, but we all assumed that it resembled a shad jumping in the water and not the gar being a man eater.

mrobisr Yes, I had seen a few real big ones. I remember one guy called me one time, saying Dave, hurry on over, you’ve got to see this. He had one he had caught & wanted to quickly get it to the processor. It must have been at least 12" in diameter & had it doubled over in the back of an AMC Pacer, with the back seat down…I keep thinking I have seen a few of them in the Sabine River, but it may have been the San Jacinto.

First, dont laugh about sharks in Kansas, at one point this place was the home of Megalodons when we were under water, your telling me it is impossible some sharks got trapped and evolved to fresh water?!

mrobisr You’re in Houston? There used to be a restaurant downtown and I was sure it was called Jonathan’s but maybe it was Brennans that I’d have to go to from time to time for my job. They had reserved rooms for the Bush’s and other rich families where they stored their wine and only they could use the room. I did get fed lunch once while I was there all day and the food was unbelievable. Houston’s humidity and traffic made it a nightmare for me but the food was amazing!

calldoctoday I used to watch river monsters with Jeremy Wade on Animal Planet. He was somewhere in Asia and he caught one of those huge freshwater sting rays. I can tell you Jonathon I will never get in the water system in the rivers in Asia. They have some crazy fish in those systems!

mrobisr Yes, I understand & the Mekong River itself is freshwater. I keep thinking I have seen sharks in the St. Johns river up a pretty good bit & the San Jacinto, the crabs you mentioned in several locations, even landlocked Redfish, Crab, Flounder, Maybe Sheepshead (if my memory is correct), & Gator Trout in Guana & a lake down near Victoria or Corpus Christi (I cannot remember its name), etc. I think those boneless sharks/rays even do better adapting than the bony ones I think. The article called the sting ray a “freshwater Fish” though & that is what threw me off.
