RON PARRISH twilliams I agree with HerbcoFood , it takes some time and practice. My wife and I have been cooking together nearly every day for the past 5 years. I recently upgraded to an iPhone11 with the portrait mode and that takes killer plated pictures very easily. This cook was a solo cook that I made for my wife and I for Valentines day this year. I watch a ton of youtube channels on cooking and found this recipe that I wanted to replicate. It came out really well. I’ll see if I can post the original video that I sourced it from as well. The meal was three courses, the starter was simple toast with a ricotta spread, topped with pan-seared tomato and garlic with an olive oil drizzle. Main dish was a stuffed chicken thigh, rolled/tied then pan-seared and baked to finish cooking. The chicken medallions were plated on a bed of creamy pureed cauliflower. Desert is a baked pear on a slather of greek yogurt with a homemade caramel sauce and granola. I didn’t have regular granola so I chopped up a granola bar! Whatever works! Joshua Weissman was the original creator that I followed for the recipe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zU9OP776xcE&list=PL4WiRZw8bmXt9q1_5MhZWqfhIdFg3eINH&index=30

@matt-westerhaus My brother actually got me some small lights to help elevate my photos, I just use my phone as well. I got them this past Christmas, so you can look at my pics from January forward of this year and tell a big difference from prior.

These are the lights he got me: EMART 60 LED Continuous Portable Photography Lighting Kit for Table Top Photo Video Studio Light Lamp with Color Filters - 2 Packs, they are on Amazon, the link shortcut isn’t working for me…user error.

We’ve got mulitple people on here who could probably walk into many restaurants and outcook or at least compete with the chefs! I am NOT one of those people. if we want to open a Sausage Restaurant I’d be in the competition but when it comes to other things I’d probably have circles run around me!

twilliams I am with you, when we have friends over and I cook something for everyone I get to feeling pretty confident about my skills then I come to this post and get my ego deflated again!

HerbcoFood I haven’t messed around with the lighting yet, usually by the time I’m finished cooking I just want to snap a quick picture and dig in! Thank you for the resource though, I’ll check out your posts and those lighting options.

twilliams Flattering! No, I haven’t considered a competition but I have thought about a youtube channel…filming cooks looks like a lot of time and effort though! I’ve got a side gig where I collect aerial videography and cut and edit shots so it would cut the learning curve down a bit.

Jonathon The real key on this site is that “others” want you to expand “your palette” and aren’t afraid of giving their “secrets” away. During my IT work or in the kitchen, I love giving it away because then I can move onto a different project. Only confident people will do THAT. The other real key here is to at least “try”. I know that all these wonderful “chefs” have always done it “perfect” the first time. Right???

twilliams I get that from people from time to time of I should open up a place, this and that. The one thing is I don’t want to stop enjoying cooking as a hobby. Plus not working on the weekends along with long hours is also what I think about. In regards to MasterChef, I actually haven’t watched that show, I will look out for it. I do know some about cooking but it’s still very limited to what all is out there.

My local grocer H-E-B every year does a contest where you submit a video of your sauce, etc. and they pick a handful of people to showcase whatever they made in the store. For some it took off for them and others it hasn’t. I was going to submit something this past year but time go away from me and I didn’t do it.

I often think of starting a small sausage / jerky food trailer when I retire again. Easiest way to get food license here in Colorado is a stainless steel kitchen. Easiest way to get that is a small trailer. Maybe some day.

Agree with a hobby versus career thing. I’ve been listening to kitchen confidential on audiobook and it’s eye-opening with regards to the amount of work and effort required behind the scenes.

lkrfletcher Yeah, if I ever decide to pull the trigger it will be a bbq trailer/food truck set up for ease of being mobile. I’d imagine I just start on random weekends when I have the time/want/energy to do it. But that is down the road.

One thing I have thought about doing is making a cookbook, but then again I have tried writing recipes and that can be a pain in the butt keeping up with it all.

@matt-westerhaus When are you going to get Joe on here to brag about his BBQ contest wins?

Tex_77 Ha, It probably wouldn’t take much to get him to brag a little!

twilliams I get that from people from time to time of I should open up a place, this and that.

HerbcoFood I’ve heard that same cry from people for years. I know what it takes to “make it” and it’s the same for me. Don’t want late nights and weekends. Many of my nights and weekends in the past were spent on soccer fields as an official. So, I’ve split time between that love and creating good tasting grub. There’s a reason that the restaurants are full. 98% don’t want to take the extra 5 mins and create something in their own home. I started creating at home because I ate at restaurants all over the world and determined that most are just “hohum”. Enjoy it as a hobby and the family and friends will stay close for sure.

                                          Keto bacon turkey cheeseburger.

Added the Walton’s garlic and onion patty mix into this turkey patty. Came out great. Served on Chaffles.
