processhead I took gun safety when I was young, dad said no hunting without it. In MN you used to be able to hunt without a license, just use your hunter safety certificate I think until 15. When my wife wanted to start shooting she went to hunter safety with a friend here in NM.

In Nebraska hunters between the age of 12 and 29 need to have a hunter education training certificate to purchase a hunting license. Older hunters are “grandfathered”, but under the current system, eventually all hunters will have had hunter education training.

processhead .38 ACP 1911 story time. As a young Sergeant assigned to the range, I was the only one working on the range when a local historic park employee brought in a confiscated Colt 1911 .38 ACP that the Dayton Police Department took off of John Dillinger when he was arrested in 1933. They were asking me to disable the gun by welding the barrel or some other permanent disabling measure. After begging them not to ever do that, I figured out a way to disable it without destroying it. I don’t want to get into details since the gun is still on display. I told them I would need a few minutes and of course began looking for any .38 ACP we might have had in our ammo inventory. Well maybe I did and maybe I didn’t get to fire one round out of the gun before disabling it. So about 71 years after his arrest, I can say that I disabled John Dillinger’s 1911 .38 and kept it’s historic value. The gun had been engraved and awarded by the Courts to the then Chief of Police Rudy Wurstner. Chief Wurstner’s family donated the gun to Dayton History and even included a copy of the Jewelry shop receipt when it was engraved for Chief Wurstner. The last time I visited, the gun was still on display at Carillon Historical Park. Who says history can’t be fun. https://www.daytondailynews.com/news/local/pistol-taken-from-famous-gangster-part-exhibit-opening-this-fall/DRl5yKd6ERIu6eOF0iFOmL/

2 things. 1st, a lot of states now allow for an online hunters’ safety class. KS is one of those states. https://www.hunter-ed.com/kansas/

2nd has anyone had the same issues I am having with Palmetto State Armory? I ordered on the 30th of last month, just today they finally have sent the final things and it will be sent in a total of 6 different packages. 2 of them with a “custom carrier” that offers no tracking information. Now, I like them in general so I am hoping there is a good reason for this that as a first-time gun builder I am unaware of but I split the order between them and righttobear and they sent my full order the very next business day.

I have not dealt with them personally, but my guess is Palmetto is drop shipping separate items directly to you from their suppliers/subcontractors to avoid delays from having to reship them to you after they get them. Typical supply chain delays.

Jonathon Having hunter safety is a requirement more and more states are requiring in order to buy a licenses. I think it is a good thing and is pretty easy in most states to take the courese on line or in person. Even if a person isn’t going to hunt it is a good idea to take the course, it stresses gun safety.

I figured every state required hunter ed. It was required in Kansas when I first started hunting in the early 80’s.

Grimpuppy A lot of states grandfather older people (born before a certain date) in, so they don’t need hunter safety.

Well sorry, I would beg to differ, sir.

Just because I am 26 or 56, and I decide to take up hunting or shooting sports, it simply can’t be assumed that I have any background in firearm safety and gun ownership that would somehow automatically make me a competent and safe gun owner.

Fortunately, many of the states with cutoff dates have had those rules on the books for a few years now. It stands to reason that a lot of middle-aged hunters and shooters have had hunter education by now due to the length of time the rules have been on the books.

                            Nope. Too sharp.
Jonathon will still put out his eye, plus he might break his finger.

Jonathon You’d think so, but it seems every year some hunter just shoots at something walking through the woods thinking it’s their desired target. Then there we have the hunting accident, even though that person was wearing the required hunter’s orange.

I do know my Texas Hunter’s Ed is good for Kansas because I hunted there back in 2019 with Jackie Bushman. It’s also good in other states but I can’t find the list at this time.

Grimpuppy A lot of states grandfather older people (born before a certain date) in, so they don’t need hunter safety.

Kansas is if you were born after July 1, 1957. It pretty much covers everyone that is getting their first license.

                                      Regarding Hunter Education Reciprocity:

                                      National Hunting Laws and Regulations
Who is required to complete hunter education in National?
Check your state law to see if you must complete hunter education before you can get a hunting license.

Is completion of the National state agency-approved course required in order to buy a license?
Yes, in many cases. In order to buy a license, states require that all first-time hunters must complete a course approved by the state agency and IHEA-USA.

                                      Elsewhere
Hunting education is currently required in several U.S. states and Canadian provinces.

                                      Reciprocity
All U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept the National Hunter Education Certificate. Likewise, National will accept Hunter Education certifications that are issued by other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)
