Great deal! I missed one just like it by $50 once, bid went at $750, I only had $700.

SupplySergeant Don’t look at it like that. If you had another $250 it probably would have sold for $1000.

Nicolai Great way to look at it. The guy bidding against me turned out to be a dealer in used restaurant equipment, and he did tell me he was ready to go much higher!

I found this Hobart 18 inch buffalo chopper today at an estate sale in a nearby town.

It came with all the important accessories including a #12 grinder and a “pelican” vegetable shredder, which I will probably try to find a new home for.
Chopper blades were in good shape and the grinder came with a 3/16 inch plate and a brand new Zico grinder knife.

The drive unit looks like it had been sitting unused for a long time. When I plugged it in at the guys garage it just hummed. After getting it home and looking it over, I plugged it in to a dedicated 20 amp outlet in my shop. It started right up and ran as it should. The amp draw while it was running was under the name plate rating, so that’s a good sign.
Looks like all it will need is a good cleaning and I look forward to trying out the bowl chopper.

I also bought a small Enterprise cast iron stuffer which you can see in the background of the top photo. A project for another day.

Well, a minor setback. The chopper was a little noisier than it should be while it was running.

I pulled the drive belt off the motor so the motor was the only rotating part of the chopper. The motor was kind of loud so I pulled the bearings out and they were pretty well roached.

The grease was dried up and the bearings were really rough when rotated by hand.
So new ones are on the way. I will put them in the motor and run it again and see if that is the only noise source.

There are bearings on the main knife shaft. They look like a pain to replace. I am hoping I don’t have to tear into the gear box to replace those.

processhead let’s hope that just the outer bearings do the trick. Otherwise, not too bad, but still a pain. The good thing is you can still work on something like this, so there is always hope, unlike a whole lot of other things these days. Still keeping my fingers crossed for you.

It is a split phase induction motor, so no brushes and no rotor winding, just stator windings.
The rest of the motor looks good, and the start capacitor checks out good.
So I am not anticipating any other motor issues. 🤞
