Well, a minor setback. The chopper was a little noisier than it should be while it was running.
I pulled the drive belt off the motor so the motor was the only rotating part of the chopper. The motor was kind of loud so I pulled the bearings out and they were pretty well roached.
The grease was dried up and the bearings were really rough when rotated by hand.
So new ones are on the way. I will put them in the motor and run it again and see if that is the only noise source.

processhead We’ll keep our fingers crossed. Those bearings & shaft can probably make quite a racket when they go or are not maintained.

There are bearings on the main knife shaft. They look like a pain to replace. I am hoping I don’t have to tear into the gear box to replace those.

Man vs. machine, I’m betting on you Paul!

processhead let’s hope that just the outer bearings do the trick. Otherwise, not too bad, but still a pain. The good thing is you can still work on something like this, so there is always hope, unlike a whole lot of other things these days. Still keeping my fingers crossed for you.

It is a split phase induction motor, so no brushes and no rotor winding, just stator windings.
The rest of the motor looks good, and the start capacitor checks out good.
So I am not anticipating any other motor issues.

Pivodog Yes, they were available and inexpensive.

processhead great find! Please let me know if you ever find a grinder attachement for mine? I’ll pay?
Funny you should mention that.

Bearings are supposed to arrive today, and I will be putting the motor back together as soon as the mail box door closes.
-
Wrong bearings arrived today. Operator error on my part. Stupid little part number and fuzzy eyesight.
Got an order in for the right ones.

processhead B203 0r 8203? Looks like B203 to me and my old eyes. That’s a pretty common bearing if it’s a B203.

I’m with you. B203 or 8203.
So which was it Paul?? -
The original bearing measures OD 40 mm x ID 17mm x Width 12 mm
The owners manual for the chopper has a parts list and a diagram. It shows that the motor bearing have an OEM part number of ND Z99503 and a Hobart part number of BB-5-30. When I looked up the dimensions for OEM bearing, they match the original bearings that are in the motor, OD 40 mm x ID 17mm x Width 12 mm.I was able to find and ordered the Z99503 bearing which were used in a lot of General Motors /Delco applications.
My research shows that B203 is a one-way clutch bearing.
8203 is a type of thrust bearing.
So neither of these appear to be viable crosses unless I am missing something. -

The one we have here you can take a bearing in and they will identify and match it usually in stock
