GWG8541 Pork for health, Rice for fertility, Peas for luck (especially of you find that dime), & collards for money, if I am not mistaken. Thanks for jarring my memory on that, it takes things like that to get the cogwheels rolling sometimes.
The chili & stuff on New Years Eve is just something we have done for a long time that seems to still survive. One of my sons & I usually do some serious pork & beef grinding with the beast, venison if we can get it these days a day or so before New Year’s Eve to get that chili ready

calldoctoday my wife’s family genealogy is primarily German and had settled here in the mid west. When I mentioned the black eyed peas, I’m pretty sure they thought I was crazy or pulling their leg.

New Year’s Day here in Texas, I am making black eyed peas, also maybe what we call Texas Caviar, which is black eyed peas mixed with Pico De Gallo and served with Fritos.

I plan to make corn bread, I just need to find the recipe I found that is good. I haven’t decided on how I am going to prepare the cabbage, my wife suggested maybe doing Brussels sprouts.

Enchiladas, taco bar, tamales and Spanish rice if we have company over but probably just my wife and myself. Probably enchiladas and rice.

My dad was from Missouri, which I think is technically the south. His tradition was to burn the Christmas tree, drink homemade Ozarks white lightning, and eat okra gumbo.

JohnG5 Yeah if not careful it will hurt you. A couple of weeks ago I made apple pie moonshine(using everclear), it turned out pretty good. I also haven’t bought everclear in about 20 years.

HerbcoFood I’ve tried the apple pie. That is good stuff, but also can be dangerous. I know my limits a lot more now though.

My Mom always did the ham, cornbread, blackeyed peas, and greens for New Year dinner. I continued this with my family. I have done some reading and am now sort of confused. Is it traditional to do this meal on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day?

HerbcoFood because of the Hillbilly in me, I have to clarify that Moonshine (aka home made whiskey, white lightning, Mountain Dew) is no where near the same as Everclear. Everclear is a grain alcohol that is double distilled and is 95% (190 proof, unless you get the low powered 151) and basically has no taste.
Moonshine is distilled from corn and according to who makes it, is about half of the alcohol as Everclear. Moonshine can have various flavors, but is basically unaged whiskey.
You are not making Moonshine with Everclear. Moonshine is a totally seperate concoction. You are flavoring the most potent distilled grain alcohol made, which is illegal to sell in about 10 states including mine, unless you know someone who can pick it up at a military PX package store for you.
Stick with Moonshine, it is safer.

JohnG5 I may have been bit by some good shine from a family member. Used to pick up a few quart jars on a regular basis. The best I ever had, was a gift from a cousin. It was grape flavored with Muscadines and man was it good. It went down way to easy. I took it to deer camp that year and it was hard for us to drag out of bed to hunt the next day.

HerbcoFood Just Apple Everclear. Just like infusing Vodka. Since Ohio outlawed it, I haven’t had any in a long time. We just called it Apple, Grape, or what ever flavor we used Everclear. That stuff is wicked. I can remember a Harry Buffalo party where someone added that to the mix. There was a lot of drunk people at that party.
