I was off the hook from cooking over the weekend, since I was in the Smoky Mountains. We stayed at the oldest operating hotel/inn in Sevier County Tennessee. Its the Buckhorn Inn, which opened in 1938 and is just north of Gatlinburg. The Inn has their own chef and the stay includes made to order breakfast. They also do pre fixe diner, which is outstanding. We ate diner at the Inn on Friday night and hit a restaurant in town on Saturday. I’ve been going to the Smokies most of my life and this spring was the first time my wife and I stayed here. We liked it so much we book this passed weekend. IMHO it is the most relaxing place to stay in the Smokies. It’s a little step back in time and definitely a great place to treat your significant other. They also open dinner to the public, which can fill up quick.
Friday breakfast was eggs Benedict with a slice of country ham and cheese grits

Friday night I was too busy scarfing down the food so no food pic, just the menu. The trout was awesome and locally sourced
    20211025_191651.jpg
Saturday breakfast was eggs over easy and my favorite breakfast meat, country ham one more time, with potatoes.
    20211025_191338.jpg
Saturday was pancakes with blueberry compote and bacon. This was the view every morning at breakfast and no it’s not photo shopped.

So I didn’t cook, but man did I eat! Back to reality

GWG8541 We all need a break from cooking occasionally, looks like you picked a great place for your hiatus.

Now that I’m back home from a great trip to Tennessee, I made my Brunswick stew with brisket, pork and chicken. I save a little from every smoke and freeze it for this reason. At the request of my lovely wife, my son baked some homemade bread bowls to serve it in. It turned out great.

bocephus The one I tried today was a jalapeño havarti. Came out soooo good. I tried some as soon as it was done and like everyone said better to let it mellow out for a week. You gotta try it. I like the idea of making it and giving it as gifts as someone had mentioned.

Sounds like you and your wife had a great time and a deserved break. I just spent a week motorcycle riding around the Smokies the beginning of October. Beautiful area and definitely some gems out there to visit.

GWG8541 I love places like that around the country. Visited many while I traveled for 25 years and went back to some of the them both in the south (Charleston’s John Rutledge house) and in the Poconos (just can’t remember the name right now). Those places are sooooo calming. Great that you treated the boss to a fantastic place. Good for both of you.

YooperDog zbigjeff I would recommend this place to anyone. Its away from the touristy stuff that I can’t stand down there. I know it pumps the local economy, but its ruining what I love about the Smokies. I got lucky getting this room back in February. It was the only one available because of a cancelation. They have alot of repeat customers and are booked out about a year during peak times, which is becoming year round down there.

I am in contact with a radio host of The Ticket who did the funniest skit about Blue Bell Ice Cream I have ever heard when I lived in Dallas. We almost crashed the car we were laughing so hard and when I got in touch with him back then he said they got in SERIOUS trouble for it but he said he had it stashed somewhere, I hadn’t thought about it in almost 20 years but seeing that post from HerbcoFood somehow made me think of it. If I can get it I will try to stash it somewhere that everyone who wants can listen to it privately cause it is WELL worth it.

GWG8541 yeah it was crazy traffic on the major roads and always road construction. Once off the beaten path things were pretty much smooth sailing. I prefer mom & pop places and hole in the wall joints off the beaten path. I will look into your recommendation, maybe a winter break from the UP before syrup season begins.

calldoctoday We certainly needed it yesterday and probably today with this cyclone bomb hitting us. We are getting rain, wind, thunder and lightening. Suppose to move ashore today. The coast is getting swells of 30 ft., and wind gust of 70 mph. Glad I live between the mountain ranges, some shelter from the big wind.

johnsbrewhouse I hope you all did OK with that thing coming through. I read that it brought months of rain in just a few hours. Glad to hear you are sitting within a little protection too, good wind break.

YooperDog the UP is beautiful also. Especially in the fall. The winters can be a little harsh.

calldoctoday Did well, the rain wasn’t to bad as we as used to rain, just not all at one time. Still getting some wind today at times just small gusts. Was going to clean up leaves, but I’ll wait until this weekend when the weather breaks. My walnut tree is pretty bald now, got to move the leaves to find the rest of the walnuts.

wdaly the wife definitely deserves the get away after putting up with me for all these years. I love hiking the mountains. We have also spent the night on top of Mount LeConte, which is the peak in the photo at breakfast. Its the 3rd highest peak in the Smoky Mountains at 6,593. The only way up is on foot and they have a Lodge on top with cabins. They serve breakfast and dinner family style. Its resupplied 3 days a week by Llama’s. I’ve done day hikes to it and spent the night. Its another great get away thats not in the touristy crowds of the smokies. LeConte Lodge is pretty primitive and like stepping back in time over 100 years. The cabins are equipped with propane heaters since it can get well below freezing, even in the summer months. The Lodge only operates from May to October, due to the weather.

johnsbrewhouse you better beat the squirrels to em. They won’t have far to go to get them buried.

cdavis The dogs are on that, they are sitting under the tree waiting for them to show up. When I hear my male barking I know he has a friend in the tree and I head out with the pellet pistol. It’s nice with no leaves no, I don’t have to look so hard.

Lastnight. Breakfast for dinner. Southwest breakfast casserole. Been getting a beef/pork blend in 2lb lugs from kroger. Was really good in this and costs $6.50 for the 2lb lug. Can’t go wrong with sourdough and a red beer either!
