Jonathon Thanks for the update, sounds like you are planning ahead. Around here people are starting to hoard toilet paper, Kleenex and paper towels.

bocephus I just smile at the “hoarders” and pray for them because they are just scared 100% of the time with very little logic involved. At least they keep my neck loose for shaking very slowly constantly.

zbigjeff I do get a chuckle when Costco and Sam’s post no return on these items and people are stuck with their hoarded items, usually see them for sale on facebook later.

The logic of hoarding or prepping is lost on me… If we indeed suffer a cataclysmic EMP which wipes out our entire infrastructure then we will not only have mass chaos but also mass casualties. Without running water, sanitation, medication production, a working law and order system or organized (and effective) medical system… Well let’s say that it won’t be a planet I will want to prolonged my suffering on. There will be mass spoilage of refrigerated and frozen goods. Death will be everywhere and people won’t bury their dead so we will have a major issue on our hands (cholera to name one). People will then try and feast on those animals that are feasting on the dead… dysentery, etc…

If that is not bad enough there will be a lot of looting, pillaging, raping etc… and again not the kind of world I need to prep for because I would rather go meet my maker than stick around to see the Walking Dead in person

Dr_Pain Well, I see your point. If we reach “the end times” and Jesus comes the second time, I don’t need to worry about anything. I know exactly where I will be, and that is a much better place then I could imagine. The items I have can go to someone else.

If we just hit hard times, that I can prepare for. Water - I have a well and can supply my own. Refrigeration, well, I can things for both convenience and long term storage. Law and order, well it’s not as if we really have than now, but if it were to get worst, I have my 357 and not afraid to use it. I figure that if it got bad enough, I could feed a couple of families in exchange for ‘protection’. Medical, well between my wife and I, we can handle many minor things. I have a good source of fuel and keeps a few spare sharp chains for the chainsaw. I know how to produce hardwood coal, so no problem smoking meat. I keep an extra year of seed for gardening of our food, have a source of honey, and fruit trees to live well on. Only thing I don’t know how to overcome is A/C, might just get warm in the summer.

I don’t go to extremes, just rotate a bit of overstock. As of the last year, it has served to feed people who were hit with hardships and served people of need.

Chef I completely agree with what you are saying. I am able to forage and able to hunt. I have cooked using advanced gastronomical techniques but also have done the primitive cooking stuff. I have a small arsenal and very proficient in hand to hand combat. As for medical knowledge, I don’t need google to treat, stitch, or even perform surgery. If you ask my friends they would say that they will find me in case the doodoo happens HOWEVER my point remains “why prolong the inevitable!?!” I could live a year alone without batting an eye, but why!?! I could make 5 years with some help from my friends, but why?!?

Dr_Pain Okay, I know we have a lot of fun here, but here’s a serious answer to why - To help others in need. If I’m blessed with waking up, then He has something else for me to do.

I knew there was a reason I liked you Chef. Although I play devil’s advocate on many subject, my true position reflects yours. If I am blessed enough to be given another day then I should make the best use of the gifts that He has given me.

Chef Dr_Pain Your attitude and conviction is supported by many on this site for sure. Keep it UP!!! I’m doing my part tomorrow by walking another newbie through the “stuffing” world. We are going to make Polish sausage using the Walton Polish blend/casings with their new grinder and my stuffer. Have a great day you two.

Dr_Pain & Chef I agree with both ideologies. I don’t desire to prep for an off grid apocalypse, which I consider to be foolish stewardship of our resources, however, I would just rather be prepared for supply chain disruptions like we have seen.

Dr_Pain I think it’ll all come down to who you surround yourself with in the immediate aftermath. If you create a good strong core of people who are interested in trying to rebuild then yeah, I think you suffer and push on, but if you’re stuck in some situation with everyone going Mad Max I can see it just not being worth it. Boy, that’s a dark thought huh? To be clear, I do NOT think that is what is coming. Eventually everyone will realize that I have all the answers and if only all power will be handed to me I will escort humanity into its next great phase. 1st, we kill all the sharks, then we have more fish and there goes world hunger. That is it. I will retire at that point.

Oh no, wait no! I would make it so a 19mm stuffing tube would work with 19mm casings and that the knob on ALL slicers must actually mean someting.

I did see an announcement today from a major player in the rotomolded cooler market today, that they will likely not have enough coolers produced to meet the Christmas demand, due to the lack of availability of the foam they use to insulate the coolers. Crazy times we live in, guess now I can justify to my wife why I needed the 4 I have.

Chef Did my good deed today. We first did 7 lbs of Polish and took a pic and then did 6 of the Blue Brat (forgot to take pics-darn). Looks like there’s another one out there that’s got the bug.
