Anyone ever use a Chapin garden push seeder? They say it will plant up to 20 different seeds with the 6 seed plates it comes with. I watched a couple videos on them and it looks good. They are around $100. If they work as good as they do in the video, it would really cut my planting time down next spring
kyle I plant a pretty good sized garden. It’s 130ft x 75ft and since I got this planter I don’t see how I made it without it. They are a huge time saver. I do have to thin the plants a little more with this but way worth it. It controls seed depth so much better than I could with a hoe. I was reluctant at price so me and a neighbor split one. He quit gardening so I gladly bought his half. IMO it’s worth every penny. Good luck with your garden no matter what you decide.

cdavis thanks. I was going to split the cost with my neighbor also. Just seemed to good to be true. Things usually work better when you watch a youtube video then when you actually get one home

We had a hard frost in northern Wisconsin june 3, but nothing was up yet. Looking great now. Temps in the 90’s, but no rain. Watering every night

kyle a little trick I learned on the plates for real small seeds like radishes and carrots I tape up every other hole and it spaces the seeds out better. Another tip is even if your just planting a small piece put the whole package of seeds in. The more seeds in the hopper the less chance of a skip in the row. It’s easy to pour them back in the package when you’re done. Hope this helps.

@DennyO Here’s my garden, it just getting started here in Washington State. Green beans are just up, tomato’s and peppers are flowering. Won’t see anything for a least a month, except maybe some cilantro.

Surg canning is a great way to have food in the cupboard that you grew and know what is in it , and also after the beginning investment the jars and bands can be reused with just new seals with no worries about shortages in any future

Mine did not turn out very big this year, but lots of them & very sweet, but smallish. So, we used a lot of them in salads & they are pretty well et up now. Margaret & Andrew used the greens too, several times, to make a really tasty pesto with carrot greens, purple basil from the garden, olive oil, elephant garlic from the garden, etc. It was really, really good & I was surprised. Anyways, they really look good, lots of them, & great packaging to boot.

@dennyo Will try to see if I can get some photos of the garden in. It is on the down hill slide now & thinking about Fall. Too hot to fish, too hot for golf, & just about too hot for the garden too. We have found that our German Queen & Cherokee Purple maters have been producing the nicest & tastiest for the past few years for a big one. Then of course we have some of those little sweet poppers & a few San Marzanos for salsa & sauce.

Jonathon I didn’t know you could use them for anything. I don’t even know what pesto is. But I’m going to look it up. I hate wasting anything usable. At least these went back to the garden for fertilizer.

@dennyo I have two small plots tilled. The first has my maders, about 30 plants of different varieties. Peppers various tpyes, onions, okra, green beans, cabbage, celery, and a variety of herbs, garlic, parsley, dill, basil, cilantro, horse radish, and mint.
The second plot is anything that vines. Cucumber, zucchini, yellow crookneck squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, and a variety of pumpkins and gourds my lovely wife wants for decorating each year.
I try to start most of mine from seed and save seed every year. Our weather in Ohio was a challenge this year we went from frost to hot in one week. I planted onion sets in early May and spread things out as I think they can tolerate a late frost. The tomatoes and peppers went in about the third week of May. I just planted pumpkin and gourds this week from seed. Now it gets busy.“You never really die until you end up on the wall at a Cracker Barrel”
