Tex_77 My Treager runs off my generator, just like my pellet stove. Less than 10A draw. We have our back-up here to with the propane powered Charbroil. We have to adapt up here in the NW and being rural. We don’t use much charcoal anymore, to much work and effort.

Tex_77 I’m with you on this one. I like the ease of my plet grill but I will never go away from charcoal. I like to tend the fire and grill. Gets you outside and beer goes well while doing it!

Once we bought the infrared Charbroil, our charcoal days were over. Had other propane grills and charcoal, the infrared grills are like charcoal without the benefits of the coals and we don’t have the direct flame like other propane grills. I tried grilling with the Traeger, but got hungry waiting for things to cook and it’s just not the same as the grill, it’s my smoker for low and slow. The Pacific NW weather doesn’t always allow us much time to BBQ outside without shelter, thus my covered 3 seasons deck with windows for year round entertainment.

Jonathon you don’t need to sous vide a steak for 4 hours, no wonder it was rendering out and falling apart on you. Pellet grills have their place, but cooking steak is not one of them. You mention how much more work it is to use the PK Grill, and cool down time etc, but what are you going to do with your pellet grill when there is a power failure? Or you run out of pellets? With the PK Grill if you run out of charcoal, you can just go out and cut your neighbors tree down and you will be good to go again. Now since I know you think your pellet cooked steaks are superior, why don’t you enter Walton’s PK Steak cookoff, with the stipulation you aren’t allowed to win anything, but you can still see where your steak ranks versus all the steaks that will be cooked on a PK Grill!

Fat_Bob I’ve lots of apple and cherry wood from pruning my trees pushed down by the creek. Got some walnut too, that stuff is terrible to smoke with, but will heat a house well.

johnsbrewhouse You are absolutely right about the walnut. Great for heat but bad to smoke with. Pecan is my favorite but Apple is close for flavor.

It’s all about the duck fat.

Jonathon It just takes forever to get it done, the Charbroil infrared will grill my steak in less than 10 minutes, the Traeger take 20 plus minutes. They comes out smokey on the Traeger, but drier.

I love the ease of my pellet cooker, and there’s some things that I swear by it for, but not steaks. If you’re not cooking a steak over charcoal, you should just cook it on the stove in a cast iron pan (which is a delicious steak, not knocking it).

I am always amazed that people consider charcoal too much work. Light a fire. Fire hot? Cook. Done, shut it down. Fire out? Take it inside. What’s so hard about that?

Charbroil, turn the knob, push the button, grill the steak, turn the knobs off, take inside and eat. Easy peasy, Japaneasy. Tonight’s Rib-eyes via the Charbroil. Seven minutes to done and yum. IMG_0124.JPG

johnsbrewhouse No one said propane wasn’t easy. People are saying that charcoal is too hard for them, and that’s why they don’t use it. I am simply pointing out that it is not, in fact, too much work.

I will chime in again, though, to mention that there was a guy who won an SCA comp last weekend on a pellet. It’s not common, but it can happen. The Smokin Brothers pellet Smokers are a really good grill, made in America (Missouri, actually), and their heat wave system will allow a good sear directly on the grates with no side burners, etc.

Midwest_kc I have used their pellets before and they left a ton of ash compared to Treager pellets or Lumberjack. I also hadn’t seen there new line of grills until I just checked out there website.

I’ve never used their pellets, I generally use bbqers delight, but their grills really are a good product. I don’t own one, but I work part time at a dealer, and we have a burn unit we use to cook on, and I would like to trade in my GMG for one, if my wife ever relents, lol.
