I have been looking to have fabricated a socket that will fit the lug of the stuffer crank handle. One that would fit either a 3/8 or 1/2 inch ratchet! This would allow the user to pull down on the handle instead of either taking it off and reattaching it or just trying to turn it all the way around. Pulling down is by far easier than pushing it back up on the back side of the crank and the ratchet would make it for faster than fumbling with taking the handle off and repositioning it.

Miket482000 Interesting idea. Is it a direct drive set up or is there some sort of gear ratio? E.g. the ratchet doesn’t move the nut that much with each click on a direct drive.

It is a sausage stuffer the ones you get here, and you would use a regular socket ratchet handle on a specially machined socket that fits onto the stud on the stuffer for the handle that came with it. I am looking at making a 1/2 inch drive socket that way I will have just as long of a lever as the original handle provides, maybe even a bit longer. Then to stuff all I have to do is raise and lower the handle in a pumping action with all of the force being applied in a downward direction. My 11 pound stuffer even with suction feet still lifts on the up swing of the handle when stuffing, so I am constantly taking the handle off and repositioning it so as to only be pulling down. You have greater leverage pulling down so stuffing is by fare easier if you only have to pull down and it would be much faster to not have to reposition the handle and deal with the splines in the handle hub and on the shaft of the stuffer not necessarily being in the best position do do that. As far as the ratchet not moving the nut much per click, that is only an issue if you are using one in a confined space and can only move the ratchet one or two clicks, in the case of the stuffer you are free to move it as far as you like.

Miket482000 My mistake I got it in my brain that you were talking about a meat mixer. You might be able to get away with a breaker bar. Easier to find in a longer length than a ratchet.

Miket482000 Jonathan talked about this how they are working on having such a handle actually designed for the new stuffer! Would be awesome incorporated in the original handles!

I retrofitted my antique stuffers with an extended handle that essentially does the same thing. One end is always on the downstroke. The added length gives extra leverage when doing snack sticks.
I do like the idea of a ratchet though.

Miket482000 My mistake I got it in my brain that you were talking about a meat mixer. You might be able to get away with a breaker bar. Easier to find in a longer length than a ratchet.
YooperDog A breaker bar would still require taking it of and putting it back on in a new position and you would still need a socket to fit the stud on the stuffer so a ratchet handle preferably a 1/2 inch drive would work great I would think as most of them are about the same length or a little longer than the original handle.

I have an Idea using some plastic wrap and wax on the stud, then some JB weld in a socket that is a little bigger than the drive stud on the Mixer. I am going to try that in a few days to see if it will hold and take the tork.

Miket482000 You may have tried an inverted Torx bit, they are different from 8 point sockets. 8 point sockets are actually made for square nuts.

johnsbrewhouse The 8 point socket does not work! It fits, but does not go into the groves far enough and when under pressure it slips. I has a hard time getting the socket off as it had twisted on the shaft far enough to get jammed on top of the ridges. It was a good fit no slop when on the shaft, just not enough slot engagement. I actually think Processheads solution is a better option than the ratchet as there is a fair amount of back pressure you can not simply raise the handle to ratchet back. you have to grab the shaft and hold it to prevent it from rotating backwards. Granted this is still faster than taking the handle off and then refitting it, it is less of an advantage than his double ended handle would be in my opinion.

johnsbrewhouse Is there a torx socket? that is what would be necessary. I also don’t recall torx having the same number of splines as the handle shaft has. An 8 point socket fits well just does not go into the spline slots deep enough to hold.

Miket482000 while not common, there are deep 8 point sockets available.

Before I bought A new stuffer from Walton’s I used A 16 mm 12 point socket 1/2 drive instead of my handle and it worked well. With the Walton’s stuffer I have found that the handle works well. My old stuffer was A garage sale special that the ratchet worked well with to give me more control of the speed.

I love the idea of the 1/2" drive. So then then you could run your stuffer with one of these.

Miket482000 while not common, there are deep 8 point sockets available.
Chef just did a search and did not see any if you have a source let me know.
