New Groups to Help Everyone on Smokers
-
We are testing out creating new groups based upon what smoker you own. Right now I have 1 for the Pk-100 and 1 for Masterbuilt. If people want I can split masterbuilt into a few different categories (but I don’t want to go totally nuts here) as I know they make a bunch, but to start this will make things easier. So, now if you have a question on a Masterbuilt or PK100 you can simply Masterbuilt or PK100 and it will notify everyone in that group!
So, to be useful people would have to go and join those groups. Let me know if you guys like this idea and what other groups for smokers or other pieces of equipment you want. Right now I have the badges showing but we can hide that if it starts to get too many badges next to our names.

Jonathon Do Traeger not count as a smoker or do you call it a grill? All my smoking is done on the Traeger, never use it to grill.
John Gehringer We can do a Traeger group, reluctantly, but we can do that.
I would call it more of a smoker than a grill, but my first instinct for the difference between a grill and smoker is whether there are multiple racks, or a single horizontal rack. Grills normally have just a single shelf, plus they are higher temps. Traeger, Green Mountain, Rec Tec, etc. are all a mix of both, but I’d put as a smoker more than grill. -
Creating a group for every brand of smoker, would be awesome, but not sure that you want to really have that many groups. Rather than being brand or model specific, what do you think about grouping the smokers into similar categories because the methods for smoking in each can be very different and some methods are tailored to specific styles of smoker.
I could see leaving the PK-100 and other smokers that Walton’s sells in a separate group, but for the rest of the smokers grouping by smoker type might be a little more valuable.
just a rough draft of what the groups could look like:
High-End Electric (Pro Smoker, CookShack, Smokin-It, SmokinTex, etc.)
Bargain Electric - (Masterbuilt, Smoke Chef, Smoke Hollow, Big Chief, etc.)
Wood/Charcoal (Oklahoma Joe, Weber, Pit Barrel, etc.)
Ceramic (Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, Broil King, etc.)
Pellet (Traeger, Green Mountain, Pit-Boss, Grilla, etc.)No offense intended to the bargain electrics, but the higher end electric smokers are definitely different beasts from the bargain smokers.

Austin maybe there should be a pellet smoker group, kamado smoker group, and maybe a group for people with PK Grills! Darkfish89

Custom pellet smokers?

I have the cabinet 30in master built smoker. My bro actually gave it to me when he moved and when I move and have more room I plan on up grading not that it is bad smoker or anything but I think I want more width rather than height.

Jonathon sounds like a great idea - Cookshack SM025, Big Green Egg and Portable Kitchen original here
coladad Glad to find another PK Grill owner, I have the 360 and Darkfish89 has an original. As far as I know we are the only ones with PK Grills.

I like the idea of having groups for different types of smokers, but I’m a Weber fanboy so I want a bullet smoker group to talk Smokey Mountain and I’d say my Weber Summit kettle is more like a BGE, or Komado. coladad While I have a PK100 and a custom built wood with propane assist, I do get a bit tingly when I hear cookshack…

Jonathon I would think there would be more value if you broke them out by category of smoker. At the end of the day the recipes that would be discussed can be used across the brands, with some idiosyncrasies here and there based on pellet, ceramic, stick burner, sawdust burners, and full-on commercial units…

ClaytonD Yeah, I was thinking more along the lines of when someone needs technical help or has a specific question on how a unit functions. Like if someone was thinking of buying a pk-100 they could PK100 and everyone would be notified who belonged to that group. We’ll end up playing around with this one for a while and maybe the way to go is to have both a Model and Style group, though I do see the potential for that to get crowded quick!

What about us diy’ers? I built a custom smoker from a commercial all stainless and aluminum refrigerator. Its 30+ cu.ft. At this time it works on 2 1000 watt hot plates which is my issue I am running short on getting it up to temp. Would like any thoughts

You could put a pellet burner in it.

smokin greg Some sort of extra insulation is probably the best thing as 2 1,000 watt plates in a 30 cubic foot smoker seems sufficient?

So are we just thinking about creating the smoker groups, or have they actually been created yet?
