Jonathon you got me thinking about AR’s and I just ordered a pistol kit in 300 blk. Complete 8.5" upper and lower parts kit, brace buffer tub…everything a guy needs but the lower housing.
Austin my son didn’t have a single tooth until he was 15 months old. He just turned two and they’ve all come in between 15 and 24 months. It was a rough several months when they were all cutting in at once!
Jonathon , per your corn export statistics. I wanted to see how that context compared in regard to Kansas farms. You cited that 537 million bushels of corn are allocated to exports. Based on current production, Kansas could provide that in its entirety, with quite a bit to spare. According to K-State, Kansas is currently raising about 700 million bushels of corn each year, which puts us in 6th place nationwide! The US grows a massive amount of corn.
Tex_77 same with brave, especially local results with maps and finding business phone numbers. Its not nearly as convenient as google is but that is a cost I’m willing to deal with.
zbigjeff yeah, you’ve got to have a good idea of costs before you start in on something new, in my opinion. This group isn’t going to be sold, or at least not for much profit, just selling to friends and family at my cost and time. It should scale pretty nicely, raising 400-500 in a season really isn’t much more work than 50, especially with a processing partner, they still need food, water, shelter and moved every so often.
For anyone interested, here are my numbers on the chickens. Some of the final stats on total feed consumed and feed per bird consumed are estimates at this time but should come in pretty close:
Estimated Feed Conversion Ratio (live weight, processed weight): 3.09:1, 4.29:1
Estimated gross carcass percentage: 0.72%
If these numbers do hold true, this will be a very high performing group, compared to the breed standard.
mrobisr I was late to the start for ordering these freedom rangers, had I had my crap together a littler earlier, I could have ordered all males, for meat purposes or all females for the dual purpose, should I want layers. All things considered, I didn’t pay too much for these birds, and having a local mill has kept feed costs pretty low.
Keep me upto date on the Bielefelders, please. I’m going to try pasture raising a group of cornish cross next spring and see how that goes, the larger size and 3 week shorter season to finish out is appealing. These should butcher at 11 weeks.
Buckmaster had a friend who just got back from black bear hunting unit 12. They tried getting to 10 but the pass was still snowed in. Wanted to pick someone’s brain from out that way in black bear hunts.

Starting the egg for a smoked spatchcock chicken, you’ve just got to let them help, even if it’s one step forward and two steps back for you; leaps and bounds forward for them every day.
Nice, I think Rainier used to be Thunderbird Firearms? Is that right? My wife and I did our CCW there, if that is the case. I may be mistaken.
Jonathon I spent two summers working on Ted Turner’s Z Bar ranch in SC Kansas/N Oklahoma. We ran 1600 pair of bison and 80 bulls. Working the bulls was insane! I’m guessing you saw video of them working bulls when they come into the chutes and smash into the crashgate at the from of the chute. The working pins had 8’ tall pipe-rail corrals, the bulls would regularly kick their back legs above the top rail. If you ever want to come this way, it is a fun day trip to drive through. Several public roads cut through the ranch and getting to see the herd is a treat.
