ND Mike that is an awesome buck. I can see why you really wanted this one. Have you had it scored. Looks like it would gross score around 170s.

cdavis don’t know how I missed this reply! Yeah he was a brute! We actually harvested another buck that was related to him as it had a rack very similar. Had it scored a long time ago and they admitted they didn’t really score it correctly. It wasn’t a Boone and Crockett scorer. It does have a ton of bone though! Mine was pretty typical. He went 156! My brother has a monster that was well over 180 gross. I like gross score. Give them credit for what they grow!

ND Mike I’m with you gross score only. Why would you subtract from what they grew 🤔. Makes no sense to me. 20141201_205731.jpg. My best gross scored 193.

cdavis That is something to be proud of, though I think just getting a deer is something to be proud of because of all the wonderful great meat.

bocephus I agree with you 100%. I’m proud of everyone I ever harvested. No matter how small. When I was younger that meat got me through some pretty rough times.

cdavis I’m curious what an average good sized buck field dresses out at down there? Up here a good big buck will be around 200 lbs field dressed. We have harvested about 10 that were 220-240 lbs though.

That sounds pretty consistent for weight on a healthy mature whitetail buck in this part of the midwest as well. Mature being one that survives to 3 1/2 years and beyond.

The further North the whitetail deer live, the heavier the mature weight seems to trend.

ND Mike our mature bucks don’t carry that kind of body weight. Here they average 150 to 170. You still see a few above the average. I killed this buck the first day of bow season last year and after field dressing he weighed 196lbs. He made the other bucks he was with look tiny. Also it was before he could run all the fat off during the rut. 20201001_193047.jpg

processhead yep for sure. I know I have seen some that are over 300 lbs on the hoof. ND whitetails are the same subspecies as the deer in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

cdavis that’s a good deer too! I wish we would’ve weighed the one my brother shot last year. It is the heaviest deer we have ever had. He had one about 8 years ago that was 232 field dressed. He won the big buck contest for weight that year. He’s actually won it about 5 times. I have won the biggest doe contest 4 times. I shot a doe with a muzzleloader that field dressed at 165 lbs! She was aged at 7 1/2 years old!!!

ND Mike wow those are some huge deer. It’s almost cheating. I have to kill 2 deer to get the same amount of meat yall get out of 1. Good luck this season maybe you’ll knock your brother out of that big buck contest 😉.

cdavis that sure would be nice. I fear our tags are really going to be reduced next year. We are have had a huge EHD outbreak! They are finding hundreds upon hundreds of dead deer.

ND Mike I just pray that never happens here. We have a really healthy deer herd. The only time I hear about around here it’s the pen raised deer and they are really strict about the way they are disposed of.
