. My best gross scored 193.cdavis I’m curious what an average good sized buck field dresses out at down there? Up here a good big buck will be around 200 lbs field dressed. We have harvested about 10 that were 220-240 lbs though.

That sounds pretty consistent for weight on a healthy mature whitetail buck in this part of the midwest as well. Mature being one that survives to 3 1/2 years and beyond.
The further North the whitetail deer live, the heavier the mature weight seems to trend.

ND Mike our mature bucks don’t carry that kind of body weight. Here they average 150 to 170. You still see a few above the average. I killed this buck the first day of bow season last year and after field dressing he weighed 196lbs. He made the other bucks he was with look tiny. Also it was before he could run all the fat off during the rut.

processhead yep for sure. I know I have seen some that are over 300 lbs on the hoof. ND whitetails are the same subspecies as the deer in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

cdavis that’s a good deer too! I wish we would’ve weighed the one my brother shot last year. It is the heaviest deer we have ever had. He had one about 8 years ago that was 232 field dressed. He won the big buck contest for weight that year. He’s actually won it about 5 times. I have won the biggest doe contest 4 times. I shot a doe with a muzzleloader that field dressed at 165 lbs! She was aged at 7 1/2 years old!!!

ND Mike wow those are some huge deer. It’s almost cheating. I have to kill 2 deer to get the same amount of meat yall get out of 1. Good luck this season maybe you’ll knock your brother out of that big buck contest

Any whitetail that dresses out at 200 lbs or above is above average. Those are all very nice deer pictured and anyone would be proud to have taken them.

.cdavis good luck to you! I got turned down on my buck tag but got a doe tag. I am planning on using my Grandpa’s Winchester 30-30 that he gave me to harvest my doe tag. That is if I can find some 30-30 shells!

ND Mike thank you sir. I just bought 5 boxes of 30 30s from optics planet.com. They were really reasonable with fast shipping. I’ve bought a lot of ammo from them lately.

ND Mike sorry about your buck tag. I sometimes forget some people have to draw for them. We’re lucky here we get 2 buck tags and 4 doe tags.

cdavis that sure would be nice. I fear our tags are really going to be reduced next year. We are have had a huge EHD outbreak! They are finding hundreds upon hundreds of dead deer.

ND Mike I just pray that never happens here. We have a really healthy deer herd. The only time I hear about around here it’s the pen raised deer and they are really strict about the way they are disposed of.

cdavis they are blaming it on our drought. EHD is caused by the bite of a midge (gnat). First killing frost will stop it. Luckily CWD is limited to only a few units in the West.

ND Mike isn’t ehd the same as blue tongue.

ND Mike as far as I know we’ve had no cwd cases. Just some blue tongue in the pen raised deer

.cdavis all the problems we have in Wi with CWD comes from game farms, but like with most things, too much money is involved so the state wont shut them down. Really makes the true sportsman mad
