For your friend I would possibly look into a UDS (ugly drum smoker) one can build their own for <$200 or buy a real nice on someone else built for close to double that amount

I saw this at Wal-Mart today…if your in the narket I’d check your Wal-Marts for one. I’d be banished from the house if I brought another grill home so soon after just getting one.

Well i broke in my PK Original Grill this weekend, and it did not fail to impress. It handled direct high temp grilling and 2 zone reverse searing equally well. Now I just need to do some steaks on it. I will also add that it is very fuel efficient. Both of these cooks were done on the same load of charcoal. Darkfish89

That looks like a nice grill. Is the housing cast aluminum/alloy? Are the grates plated chrome? Stainless?

It should be good for many fine meals

processhead Cast Aluminum, probably an alloy I’d guess. The standard grate is chrome plated, they do offer a stainless steel one as well. Here’s a link to get one from Walton’s PK Grill

Well finally got my hands on a used Broilmaster. Converted it from NG to LP. Replaced all the guts now it runs like charm and gets as hot as the sun. I noticed when i replaced the burner the old owner had the wrong sized burner it, the new one is much larger. Jonathon you can never have to many grills.

So does anyone have the new Treager Timberline or the XL? https://www.traeger.com/pellet-grills/timberline-xl

Looks like they come with a lot of features including Meater probes. I learned Traeger now owns the Meater company.

Tex_77 a buddy of mine worked for Traeger so I had 4 diff units with his discount (40-50%). They all had a few warts but turned out some great food. However at the price of these new ones I can’t imagine value unless quality went way up.

Tex_77 figured it was Meat Church. Official seasoning of the “time and temp?” crowd. Honestly that price point is a massive miss in my opinion.

Jamieson22 At $3,500 I could buy a old Volkswagen bug and put a great pellet hopper on it and have a better grill with more space and still have money to burn on options. I thought $1,000 was a lo when I bought my Texas elite many years ago, but it was made in Oregon, not in China.

They are certainly pricey, coming in higher than a Yoder YS640.

HerbcoFood If people did their research, they would find everything Traeger uses is the same as what everybody else uses as far as parts, they all are coming from China now with very few exceptions. That is why I am looking at building my myself a new pellet smoker from scratch. You can buy an American made hopper assembly with PID temperature controls now for around $500.

johnsbrewhouse I agree. I bought my last Traeger when they were still made in Oregon. When they first came out, they really talked up American made. So when the first one died and I found out they were no longer made in the US, I bought something else, which is made here. Unless they have really beefed up their quality, I cannot see them selling very well at that price point. I guess some people have that kind of money to spend, I’m just not one of them.
