Devil dog (not the good kind!)
-
Jonathon a little bit. One of the many nicknames for Marines. We got our nickname Devil Dogs from official German reports which called the Marines at Belleau Wood Teufel Hunden. It has been said that this nickname came about from Marines being ordered to take a hill occupied by German forces while wearing gas masks as a precaution against German mustard gas. While the Marines fought their way up the hill, the heat caused them to sweat profusely, foam at the mouth and turned their eyes bloodshot, and at some points the hill was so steep it caused the Marines to climb up it on all fours. From the Germans’ vantage point, they witnessed a pack of tenacious, growling figures wearing gas masks, with bloodshot eyes and mouth foam seeping from the sides, advancing up the hill, sometimes on all fours, killing everything in their way. As the legend goes, the German soldiers, upon seeing this spectacle, began to yell that they were being attacked by Teufel Hunden “dogs from hell.” AKA Devil Dogs!

I’m fairly sure Riggins was created in a laboratory in hell with the express and sole purpose of ruining my life and happiness.Jonathon
I am sure he is in the dog house right now, but in spite of that, I hope that he didn’t ingest any carbon fibers or get them imbedded in his mouth. Could be bad news if that happened. -

GWG8541 I like that story. Its probably true. I know a few former marines and they certainly were tenacious.

samspade I’m sure the Marines attacking that position didn’t feeling like Devil Dogs with gas masks on and going hand to hand, but as long as the Germans thought that, its all good.

I’m glad mine just takes the stuff outside anymore and leaves it for me to find. He used to chew it up until we started putting it into his mouth and making him carry it back to the house. It’s worked so far and giving him a treat before we leave.

Jonathon so tell Riggins he’s in good company with his new nickname. I really hope he is OK. Hopefully he didn’t eat to much of the pole.
-
and how was the pole put in a place where he could get to it???!!!

Back in 1775, my Marine Corps came alive……

No no no, Riggins is NOT the hero of this story! Trust me, I am sure he didn’t swallow any of it and have been monitoring his “leavings” and none of it is embedded in his mouth. Checking that was fun, I have never done anything to this dog but if I try to grab his paws or hold him down it is WW3 right away. No build-up, just going full crazy mode. He was abused pretty badly before we got him though, so I don’t try to win those battles very often, it isn’t worth putting him through it.
When I wanted to do doggy DNA thing with him I needed to put a qtip in his mouth for 60 seconds. I started laughing as soon as I read the directions because I knew that wouldn’t work. Now, Riggins has seen me walk around with a Q-tip plenty of times, but he somehow knew this one was for him and just immediately ran away, so I found him on the bed and tried it and he barked at me. This dog almost never barks and has never barked at me aside from that one time. I eventually just got some peanut butter and put it on a spoon and held it out of reach and put the qtip underneath his mouth so the drool would collect on it. Improvise, adapt, overcome!

Jonathon said in Devil dog (not the good kind!):
Improvise, adapt, overcome!
That’s the way to do it! Kind of the story of my career.

Jonathon Riggins sounds a lot like my Deutsch-Drahthaar (German Wire Haired Pointer). I was given first pick of a very large litter, I think there were 13 or 14 pups. The only one that acted birdy was the runt of the litter. I named him Goose. He refused to answer to Goose, so I changed it to Dux. Dux is going on 5 years old now. The runt is now right at 110 pounds and is a hard headed, hard charging dog. He ran into me going full tilt and broke my leg. He growls, He growls if you are doing something he doesn’t like. He growls if you are doing something he like. He growls when you stop doing what he likes. This is the 6th of this breed of dog I have owned, and by far is the strangest of them. I took him to a professional dog trainer that works with hunting dogs. He called about a week in and said that Dux is the strangest dog he had ever worked with. I guess we make a good pair.

Jonathon doh! It’s a shame about your gear! My lab puppy got in my closet last week and chewed up a headlamp, and my binocular covers… By the time I found it, too late to even scold the puppy, she wouldn’t remember. So the only recourse is letting out some angst here! I’m totally with you on this, grrrr that devildog!

Jonathon If you ever get a puppy, do all the things to them that you would want to do to them when they are adults. I always reach into their food bowls as puppies and if they growled remove the food and correct them. Mess with paws, ears and mouth. I had four dogs at one time and could put a bowl down with treats and they would all eat out of it at same time, no growling. I realize you got Riggins when he was grown and the people who had him previously should have never owned an animal.
