Overrated Food

Grimpuppy Not in total agreement. But, everyone has “THEIR” list and I respect THAT!!! I know what NOT to serve you when you come over and that’s a good thing to know. It’s one thing I ask people to identify before I cook for them. Many don’t know what they like. But, they DO know what they don’t. Have a good rest of your day. BTW: making GRITS for shrimp and grits for tonight’s meal. Yep, I’m smiling.

Grimpuppy man you better stay out of the south. Them could be fighting words.

I know what to pack ateotwawki

Grimpuppy Man how can you live without coffee?

We all have those foods that some think are the end all be all, or how do you not like that response to certain things, I know I’ll be sent to the whippin’ post on this, but whatever!
Here is my list:- Pancakes/waffles - I am hungry within an hour, you still have to eat proteins to fill you up, so what is the point.
- Bread pudding - I have had it a various high end steak houses, where it’s “supposed” to be great.
- Corn bread - this is one of those, well you have to add butter, honey, jalapenos, etc. then it’s good. Let’s be honest if you are having to add a whole bunch of other things to make it good, is it really that good?
- Bananas foster - Same as bread pudding, been to NOLA, had it there where it began, highly overrated.
- Baked beans - Yet another, well if you doctor the crap out of them up, then they are good, sorry sir, hard pass.
- Adding bacon doesn’t always make the dish better - I could argue with you on somethings it actually over powers the dish and takes away from it. If you aren’t careful the dish will just taste like bacon, if that is the case just eat bacon on it’s own.
HerbcoFood This recipe will change your mind on baked beans, doctored or not.
Keri’s Hog Apple Baked Beans, basically sweet/spicy with bacon, pulled pork , and apple pie filling:
https://tvwbb.com/threads/keris-hog-apple-baked-beans.21966/I have had BBQs where people go back for 4ths of these. I often add some diced chipotle in adobo for added heat with the sweet.

Grimpuppy Coffee??? It can be used to make gravy or used in seasonings; rubs and marinades, or to keep you awake on those late night smokes.

I have so many opinions on overrated foods BUT I won’t go there…… what I will do instead is share that I can eat anything however CANNED green beans are my kryptonite. I cannot doctor those things enough to like them.
Secretly I would say that escargot and lobster are highly overrated. When you need that much butter or mayonnaise to make them taste good…… well I was not suppose to go there LOL!!

zbigjeff - Shrimp and grits with maybe a little cheese is my happy place.

How do not know how something that smells as good as coffee can taste so bad. I have tried it about every way imaginable. I have had people sneak it into foods and I can always pick it out. For some reason the taste doesn’t match the smell for me.

Grimpuppy Because you buy coffee from the store, if you roast your own its so much better

It may be better, but if you don’t like the taste of coffee you won’t like the taste of good coffee.

If my profile pic wasn’t holding a beer, it’d be a cup of coffee. Fresh pot every morning. Been loving the Starbucks Sumatra for a lot of years now. Part of the wakeup process.

PapaSop Sumatra is one of my favorites. Picked up 2-1lb bags a week ago in the clearance bin for $5.99 @bag. I felt like I stole them!

johnsbrewhouse I agree on it’s where you buy it and how it’s stored. But, roasting your own is at another level which I only do when it’s decent weather outside. Don’t have a place where the ambient temp allows the coffee to roast to first crack when the outside temp is below 50. Yep, I did it in the house and not ever again. I do have a source that roasts my Tanzanian Peaberry beans are roasted and bagged for me fresh. I bring them home and place them in vacuum packed jars. I do understand that coffee is not for everyone. That’s why there’s all sorts of “other” items.

craigrice We eat grits at least once a week here for breakfast, but I can’t convince my wife to eat them any other way. She also told me she doesn’t care for hominy, told her grits are made from hominy and made her look at the box.

my wife likes the yellow hominy

zbigjeff I still roast mine in the house, mine is a smokeless roaster by Nesco, they quit making them. The next one will be one that can be exhausted out the window via ducting. I only roast Kona beans, but I had a cheap source and have several green pounds vacuum sealed.
