Retired157 Looks like we have the same tastes, I have a Polaris 550 SP and we have property that boarders the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. My son-in-law has the cabin, I have my 5th wheel up there. We only have six acres. Sometimes it would be nice to have tracks on the quad to hit the NF but they frown upon the use. Just a few trespassers we have daily.Packwood Elk.jpeg One of our building projects as well, 30x30 pole shelter with kitchen and bathroom with shower.Pavillion Shake Project, front completed.jpeg

Yes we do! Back when I first came to Montana, there were no rules on running 4wheelers & motorcycles in the NF but all that changed. Have to admit though… they may have done us all a favor! You put a set of tracks on your 4wheeler and you’ll see just how much fun a guy can have in the snow… awesome! My project for the cabin this year will be to get my shower house done.

So, you have ‘critters’ too I see. Do you run any trail cameras? I have ten standard cameras and one cell camera. It’s amazing to ‘see’ just what critters are out there. It’s addicting!

Here are a couple of ‘catches’ I got this past year…

Retired157 We run three trail cams, mostly to keep an eye on who is coming onto the property. The neighbor had a problems with tweekers breaking into his containers and sheds, we have never had the problem, but we have cams. The other neighbors have cams too and have caught quite a variety of animals on them.IMG_0060.JPG Shot of my 5th wheel and covered kitchen and bath area and the cabin under construction.IMG_0433.JPG

        Thank You very much!

Looks like you have a ‘Get Away’ as do I. I’m about a mile off the dirt road and unless you ‘knew’ I was there, it just looks like more forest. Besides that, I’ve been told that ‘folks’ in the area refer to me as the ‘crazy old retired cop’… I think that’s because before I had tracks on my 4wheeler, I use to snowshoe in… 3-1/2 miles one way from the highway.

I strategically located my cell cam so as to ‘catch’ any unwanted visitors. I also have pay for ‘immediate’ uploads for/of any pics taken… $5 monthly… Reconyx! Pretty sure I could be there to ‘greet’ them before they could ‘avoid’ me… would not be pretty.

I’m excited to FINALLY do a batch of Summer Sausage. Won’t be long now thanks to you. Getting all my equipment lined out. Yes… pics to follow.

        Later

Retired157 Ron we can make it happen and worry about the finances later, it not like I’m going broke helping you out. I can probably get it out tomorrow via USPS priority mail, just send me you last name in the chat so I can put it on the label. If I mail it tomorrow they say it will get there Monday. I will send you 6 ounces.

Hey John… check out my 'Home away from Home. Built this myself while I was on the department in anticipation of ‘hunting’ my retirement away. I have 20 acres that borders National Forest… remote! She operates on Solar & Propane. In the spring & summer, it’s a 45 minute drive from town. Winter access as you can see requires ‘tracks’ but it’s a hell of a lot more fun getting there!

bocephus the wildlife photos come via our friend Retired157 and the State of Montana, I can only take credit for one, the herd of elk near the creek on our property.

                              Good Morning Everyone!

Well, as the time is now ‘rapidly’ approaching to my finally being able to take a stab at making some Summer Sausage, I found myself having one of those ‘OCD’ moments yesterday my friends accuse me of. I began going over my ‘working guide’ with respect to just ‘how much’ of any given additive I was going to need for my first run of 10lbs of meat. Keep in mind I have ‘copied’ all of Walton’s Conversion Tables and have been following them to the LETTER. That said, I had that little voice in my head that just would not stop leaving me alone. It kept asking… ‘Are you sure you got this right?’ Have you ‘considered’ product ‘density’ with respect to weight? What about the difference(s) between a ‘dry weight’ ounce v/s a ‘fluid weight’ ounce? (Dang that voice!)

So, I found myself delving into these questions yesterday… OCD; yeah right! I’m happy to report, that I was pleasantly ‘surprised’ that my initial calibrations of how much of each product to use were very much ‘correct’. I was able to ‘double’ check Walton’s Conversion Charts with a Dry Weight Conversion Chart I found during my research yesterday. Pulling from both, I came up with my ‘Final Answer’ for my working guide… (as underlined on the far right side).

So, I hope this helps anyone else out there so afflicted as I…

Yep… pretty sure my predators are eating very well. The bobcats keep my rabbit & bird populations under control while the Lions work on the elk & deer. Just last week while my buddy & I were up checking our cameras, we found a fresh elk calf - lion kill… pretty dang cool! If we had found it a week earlier, we could have set a couple of cameras on it and watched the goings on. Once the cat(s) are done, the coyotes move in and drag things all over!
