GWG8541 The neighbor and I tried some of the moonshine while he was gone to Texas once when I was in high school. Mixed it with Kool-Aid. Haven’t tried it again since.

JohnG5 I may have been bit by some good shine from a family member. Used to pick up a few quart jars on a regular basis. The best I ever had, was a gift from a cousin. It was grape flavored with Muscadines and man was it good. It went down way to easy. I took it to deer camp that year and it was hard for us to drag out of bed to hunt the next day.

GWG8541 I understand there is a difference, I just don’t know what to call what I made. Apple Pie Liquor? Clear Apple Pie? and so on…

HerbcoFood Just Apple Everclear. Just like infusing Vodka. Since Ohio outlawed it, I haven’t had any in a long time. We just called it Apple, Grape, or what ever flavor we used Everclear. That stuff is wicked. I can remember a Harry Buffalo party where someone added that to the mix. There was a lot of drunk people at that party.

bocephus you can start a car with Everclear. I sipped a little once to see what the big deal was. Its basically tasteless, and I would not recommend drinking it straight. Great to make flavored liquor with if you cut it, but cut it good. I think the Moonshine name came from people wanting to pass it off as shine to friends. Two totally different tastes and distilling methods. Here is a picture of some real Apple Pie Moonshine. Not a drop of Everclear in it.

bocephus HerbcoFood all this talk about Moonshine made me thirsty. I went down to the basement to check the Moonshine shelf and brought out the best store bought Apple Pie Moonshine in MHO. Its distilled by Sugarland’s in Gatlinburg, TN. Most Apple Pie shines have a cinnamon flavor with it, which I like, but Sugarland’s has a caramel flavor and I really like it. Cheers!

New Year’s Day here in Texas, I am making black eyed peas, also maybe what we call Texas Caviar, which is black eyed peas mixed with Pico De Gallo and served with Fritos.

I plan to make corn bread, I just need to find the recipe I found that is good. I haven’t decided on how I am going to prepare the cabbage, my wife suggested maybe doing Brussels sprouts.

HerbcoFood I had never heard of the Pico De Gallo & Fritos making the Texas Caviar. I thought it was mainly the blend with the Jalapolenos in the Black Eyed Peas. That is interesting & sounds tasty too.

HerbcoFood Sounds like an awfully good dip to me. Just plain old tortilla chips would probably work to it sounds like, but the fritos are a little more “Corny”. Pun kind of intended.

GWG8541 Pork for health, Rice for fertility, Peas for luck (especially of you find that dime), & collards for money, if I am not mistaken. Thanks for jarring my memory on that, it takes things like that to get the cogwheels rolling sometimes.
The chili & stuff on New Years Eve is just something we have done for a long time that seems to still survive. One of my sons & I usually do some serious pork & beef grinding with the beast, venison if we can get it these days a day or so before New Year’s Eve to get that chili ready

That is our family tradition too, only exception is that it can be cabbage or greens depending on what’s in the garden. New years day for sure.

Used to do Cheese Fondu on New Year and on Anniversary and Christmas Morning my mom always made Pepperoni bread with Mozzarella and Swiss cheese. I miss a few things about New York and that was absolutely one of them

Jonathon you can carry on the traditions at your home, it will give you the opportunity to hone your baking skills. There are some skills and recipes I just can’t get the same results as my great grandparents, grandparents and parents. It keeps me trying and kicking myself because I didn’t ask when they were around. My mom, 84, is still around and I don’t fail to ask now. I think part of it’s how we remember things, products used, e.g. lots of homemade canned goods and that secret ingredient.
