New Year’s Day here in Texas, I am making black eyed peas, also maybe what we call Texas Caviar, which is black eyed peas mixed with Pico De Gallo and served with Fritos.

I plan to make corn bread, I just need to find the recipe I found that is good. I haven’t decided on how I am going to prepare the cabbage, my wife suggested maybe doing Brussels sprouts.

HerbcoFood I had never heard of the Pico De Gallo & Fritos making the Texas Caviar. I thought it was mainly the blend with the Jalapolenos in the Black Eyed Peas. That is interesting & sounds tasty too.

it’s on new years day. The more black-eyes you eat the more money you will make that year…

Garry Tarpley No that is the Collards or at least some form of green, like mustards, cabbage, turnip greens, etc. Whatever turns you on & brings the dough in.

bocephus you can start a car with Everclear. I sipped a little once to see what the big deal was. Its basically tasteless, and I would not recommend drinking it straight. Great to make flavored liquor with if you cut it, but cut it good. I think the Moonshine name came from people wanting to pass it off as shine to friends. Two totally different tastes and distilling methods. Here is a picture of some real Apple Pie Moonshine. Not a drop of Everclear in it.

GWG8541 When I was young, I had an ear infection, the doctor told my mom to get some Everclear and put a few drops in my ear a few times a day. We lived on the border on MN and ND, she had to go to ND because you couldn’t sell it in MN.

HerbcoFood Sounds like an awfully good dip to me. Just plain old tortilla chips would probably work to it sounds like, but the fritos are a little more “Corny”. Pun kind of intended.

Used to do Cheese Fondu on New Year and on Anniversary and Christmas Morning my mom always made Pepperoni bread with Mozzarella and Swiss cheese. I miss a few things about New York and that was absolutely one of them

bocephus I believe it. At 95% alcohol it would kill about any bug it touched. Good hand or equipment sanitizer also.

GWG8541 Pork for health, Rice for fertility, Peas for luck (especially of you find that dime), & collards for money, if I am not mistaken. Thanks for jarring my memory on that, it takes things like that to get the cogwheels rolling sometimes.
The chili & stuff on New Years Eve is just something we have done for a long time that seems to still survive. One of my sons & I usually do some serious pork & beef grinding with the beast, venison if we can get it these days a day or so before New Year’s Eve to get that chili ready

That is our family tradition too, only exception is that it can be cabbage or greens depending on what’s in the garden. New years day for sure.

Jonathon you can carry on the traditions at your home, it will give you the opportunity to hone your baking skills. There are some skills and recipes I just can’t get the same results as my great grandparents, grandparents and parents. It keeps me trying and kicking myself because I didn’t ask when they were around. My mom, 84, is still around and I don’t fail to ask now. I think part of it’s how we remember things, products used, e.g. lots of homemade canned goods and that secret ingredient.

Pepperoni bread, pepperoni rolls, and pizza rolls all look like a takeoff on a pepperoni and cheese stromboli. The wife doesn’t like pepperoni so I do a ham and cheese stromboli.

Boy, this conversation went around the bend a couple of times. By the way my Grandfather lived in a little community called Clear Springs, MO. He was a jack of all trades and had a store and black smith shop. He also ran a still and made moonshine. Here in my little corner of Idaho New Year’s day was cold -4 degrees for the low and 19 for the high. The patio had about 1 1/2" of ice on it. Getting to the smokers was done to the tune of “Slip Sliding Away”. I didn’t spend much time outside when I put the ham on. I had planned on glazing it toward the end but blew that off. The oven was full of “Funeral potatoes”, ginger carrots, and cornbread. The blackeyed peas and spinach were on the stove top. We live right in the middle of the fruit orchard area and make lots of jam. I had planned on glazing the ham with a peach, jalapeno, and tequila jam (yes it was great on the corn bread). NO rice, I am sort of over that fertility stuff at 70 years old (besides the wife would kill me). I don’t know if this meal will bring luck in the future but it sure has brought the luck of good friends and family gathering around the dinner table over the years.

Idaho Smokey it was definitely an interesting post. I should be good this year. I had my greens on New Years eve for dinner, but made sure I kept a little for lunch on the first just in case. This picture was our New Years day dinner at my sister and brother-in-law’s house. 20220101_210055.jpg This was my plate with roasted pork, sausage, kraut, mashed potatoes and Black Eyed Pea salad.

I know I certainly gained weight, but a years worth of good luck and good fortune is yet to be seen. It was interesting looking at everyone’s traditions. Many are similar or the same, just some small twists along the way.

Idaho Smokey it was definitely an interesting post. I should be good this year. I had my greens on New Years eve for dinner, but made sure I kept a little for lunch on the first just in case. GWG8541 You can buy liners for that big roaster, makes for easier clean up. We always use them when we make beans and cheesy potatoes.
