craigrice We tried it a time or two when we were a whole lot younger, just for nostalgia. I used to put a wood burning stove in every home I built for us to keep us connected to the past. I still like splitting wood for exercise, but just not much use for the wood any more it is so hot, other than what I use for smoking & having a little bonfire every Winter or Fall. It was not too bad & nice to talk about it now. Honestly don’t know if I could have kept it up all these years tough, like the old timers, in these modern days & times.

My wife picked this colorful bowl of peppers. My hands started to get warm just holding it.
processhead Looks like you’ve got some Cayennes (best for flavor) in there & some Chilis. We got those along with Jalopolenos & my favorite, Poblanos this year. Yours look real nice. You can dry those cayennes & the chilis in the sun, the oven, or the smoker & they will keep for ages & you will always have some when you need them. If you are like us, that is a lot.

calldoctoday I grew up with my grandparents in my great-grandfathers farm house my grandfather was born in 1896 my grandmother was born in 1893 she taught in one room school houses my grandfather was home birthed in the house and died in the garden at 81 yrs. old I would not trade this experience for anything I feel lucky to have this past even though I was born in 1960

craigrice That was indeed a wonderful experience. One of my grandfathers was born in 1867 (I believe I have that right) & the other & grandmothers in 1903 or so. There were some really wonderful stories to hear from all those good folks that I cannot even come close to telling.

craigrice my grandad died at 99. I can remember pulling up at his house in Tennessee when he was 90 and he was out in the August sun working the garden. I cant hold a candle to him or my dad. I lost Dad a year ago August 29th at 91 years. He was gardening until the end. I harvested his tomatoes last year and gave them to friends and family. I was lucky to have the family I have. Great parents, grandparents and many aunts and uncles that set the bar high.

I lost Dad a year ago August 29th at 91 years. He was gardening until the end. I harvested his tomatoes last year and gave them to friends and family. I was lucky to have the family I have. Great parents, grandparents and many aunts and uncles that set the bar high.

craigrice I was born in 1956, but was fortunate enough to be very close to my grandparents and even when very young, to my great grandparents. They taught me so much, not just skills that I used throughout my life, but a value system that is loss today.
As you, I feel very bless to have had them in my life. I still use so many of the tools from my grandfather and kitchen stuff from my grandmother. The skills I learned transended gender, I was as comfortable making a wedding cake or sewing as I was pulling an engine or tearing into electronics.
I get to see them live on not only through the things I do and equipment I use, but also through some of the traits of my daughter. While I adopted her, she cherishes much of my past and upbringing.
What remains is passing this on to my grandchildren.
I love the skills, talents, and values of the Meatgistics crew. Many of us are a link to the past while building the furture.

I remember getting sweet corn by the bushel and slicing off the cob for canning. We had a bunch of small Tupperware containers that were stacked in the freezer, I never thought I would do that again but I love the sweet corn that way in the winter. Also going to my uncles and processing chickens that he raised, plucked a lot of chickens with my brothers one Saturday in the fall.

GWG8541 I am very sorry to hear of that, but glad to hear that they both lived a wonderful life. We lost my last grandfather about 35years ago & my last grand mother who lived to be nearly 100 about 20 years ago. Both my parents have been gone in person now for many years as well. They just don’t make us like that any more, no matter how hard we try. Those folks were a whole lot of good things, all bundled up into one.
