I’m Done - Did all that Pickling and this happens.
Shelf collapsed in my cabinet.
lkrfletcher As long as no one got hurt ! They can be replaced.Feel bad for your loss though

busted jar on the floor looks like one dilly of a pickle…lol sorry I had to.
-
lkrfletcher Sorry you had that happen. I’ve been there before. It is so easy to underestimate the total weights as you accumulate jars. I began to realize it when I would put 12 filled quarts back into the box the jars came in. First time I picked one up I started to build new shelves.
Keep in mind that a gallon, with jars, will weigh around 15 pounds or so.
I built a separate shelving unit for canning jars and cook books. The weight is way more than normal shelfing could take.
Chef - Yup, learned the hard way. Going to have to reinforce them

GWG8541 I harvested my garlic yesterday, 6/16. It’s been really hot here in Colorado and the bottom 1/3 of the leaves were turning brown. I plant it in late September and usually harvest it around Father’s Day but it was starting to lay down from the heat. This year we only planted 9 varieties, in years past we have planted as many as 20+ varieties.

Bob Stehlik Just now catching up with you guys. Dug the garlic today. Some was a little small so will plant them this fall. Good quantity though.

Looks good. I planted garlic for the first time this year. Still trying to figure out when they will be ready to harvest. Watched some videos and I think they are almost there. I pulled one and it seems pretty small so going to give them some more time. Would be nice to have a steady supply of garlic around. -

wdaly Looking good. I finished cleaning, trimming & bagging mine on Sunday. I bought some mesh bags and we hang them under the stairs to the basement. Most hold up very well.

You should have cut off the scapes by now, if left on they can draw nutrients away from the bulb. You can cut up the scapes and use like chives or pickle them. Go to www.keeneorganics.com. They have a pretty good breakdown on growing garlic from planting to curing and storage. I’m sure you will find it helpful.

Bob Stehlik I was thinking it was when the tops fell over. Or is that the cue for harvesting onions?

Bob Stehlik thanks. The ones I planted do not have scapes. Can’t remember if those are the soft neck or hard neck. Definitely plan on planting those with scapes next time around so that I can use them in recipes. Thanks for the website link will definitely check that out as well.

Ridley Acres Onions will start to droop when they are ready to harvest, but you don’t need to wait that long. You can harvest onions at almost any stage of growth. Naturally the taste will vary as well as the size. Check out the link from keeneorganis.com. It’s out of the Madison area. Under their “How to grow Garlic” tab there is a lot of useful info. They also have planting garlic available. GO BUCKS!!! & BREWERS!!!

lkrfletcher That is terrible. I cannot even begin to imagine what I would do if that happened. Time to switch over to Drink of Choice, I know that much!

Just made saurkraut with these for first time.Worked pretty well -
I did a quick pickle last night of a quart size jar of banana peppers, jalapenos(red and green), some other hot pepper I forgot the name of, whole garlic, sweet onions and carrots. I plan to light my stomach on fire tonight…well really over the next two weeks.

HerbcoFood reminds me of a spicy vinegar dip one of my Filipino friends made for me. She had mixed most of that stuff together in one jar with some habanero‘s in there as well. Spicy as hell but delicious. If you used vinegar for the quick pickle consider using that as a dipping sauce for some Filipino pork barbecue
