I think my cardiologist wished I liked diet and exercise as much as I like food and eating. The struggle is real.

I think my cardiologist wished I liked diet and exercise as much as I like food and eating. The struggle is real.

I fired 2 cardiologist so far because they keep saying I should diet and exercises. I normally am a fairly fit 6’6" 250lbs with a little of the dad bod. I am married to a dietician and we eat well. I’ve been a practicing PT for 26 years and have exercise pretty much all of my life. I can gain and drop weight like nobody’s business and it will not affect my BP or resting heart rate. I bike ride between 50-80 miles per week, lift weights and work physically during the day

The first cardiologist reluctantly put me on 2 BP meds which did help the BP but he also told me to eat better and exercises more. A blind recommendation since he did not know me. Well I went on a strict paleolithic based diet and would bike ride 20 miles/day on top of my regular long rides on the weekend and the rest. I was consuming about 3200 calories a day and dropped from (at the time) 260lbs to 209lbs and this is where they put me on a 3rd BP med, I changed the diet to a keto friendly and gained some weight back to around 224lbs and this is where they put me on my 4th. I said “You’re fired!” and went back to normal healthy eating and at 245-250lbs my BP was good enough to eliminate 1 of the BP med.

Found a new cardiologist and he gave me the same song and dance and at that point the only diet I had not tried was vegan, so I went vegan for 6 months and gained 15lbs (up to 265lbs) and I told him “Goodbye”. My internist ran a bunch of test, had my prior stress and nuclear stress test and did a CT scan to make sure I did not have some tumor on my kidneys and/or stenosing of my arteries which would explain my high BP and basically told me that I had Familial Hypertension and that there was nothing I could do about it other than being on meds for the rest of my life. He actually mentioned that the added stressors (physical and psychological) on my body was actually worse than my elevated BP

Dr_Pain Read “The Metabolic Storm” by Dr. Emily Cooper. She is my Dr. I have metabolic disorder, I don’t fit models that doctors use to diagnose people either. My mother was a RD as well and read her book and was rather amazed at what she has concluded. I weighed 400 lbs. at one time and always struggled to keep weight off, exercise and all. I ended up having gastric surgery and still struggle with the metabolic disorder, but am able to be healthier eating the way she wants me to. Butter, eggs and all those things that are suppose to be bad for you, but also eating things good for you with them as well. Salt was my biggest enemy, but through a reduction in how I use it, it no longer has negative effects. Although I am still considered overweight, my cholesterol, B/P, triglycerides and particulates in my blood are all good. A lot of Dr’s. just shove people into a perfect model for their diagnosis and treatment, my dad did this as an R.N. since this is what they are and were taught and it’s even worse now that insurance companies have become involved.

Dr_Pain A little side note for you, Russel Wilson, Seattle Seahawks QB also saw her and is a partner in a side company she has. She see’s many professional athletes in the practice. Seattle Performance Medicine, it’s a 60 mile drive for my appointments when I have to go in person, but worth it.

I just ordered the book as well (can’t let Dr_Pain get one on me LOL)

When I graduated from grad school, I weighed 119. I finally hit 125 at 30 years old. Since then, it’s been a loosing battle.

I have been fasting every second day and loss 12 pounds in the last week. I ready to see what Dr. Cooper has to say. I’m tired of going hungry just to loose a few pounds.

Dr_Pain I’ve only fired one so far. I get it for sure. Im still pretty active and have worked out in some form or another my entire life. I’ve never had a BP issue, but developed an electrical issue a few years ago with the ticker. They have tested for everything and say there are no blockage issues. I just throw PVCs like Nolan Ryan threw baseballs. Funny, I never had an issue until I retired, so I went back to working. Right now things are going pretty good, but I could afford to shed a few pounds at 6’2" and 224. Like you, I can go up and down on weight fairly easy. My biggest life change has been trying to reduce stress, which is mostly self induced anyway. As you can tell from my posts, I pretty much eat and drink what I want when I want within reason. My dad passed last year at 91 and his dad at 99. Im hoping there is a little genetic help with all of this thing we call longevity. I do know one thing, I’m gonna live it on my terms and if I die, I’ll die happy.

Like Chef and like GWG8541, the struggle is real. We are dedicated to the task but there seems to be a disconnect between life (as normal people experience) and what we experience.

As for stress, this is something I cannot modify and all of it is self-imposed. I own multiple corps, haven’t taken a vacation in 17 years and just trying to perfect the American Dream (that the more you work the more you get back). As I mentioned to Chef I use cooking as therapy. It keeps me sane

Dr_Pain For the most part, I live isolation. Wife works outside the home as a principal at an elementary school. She leaves at 7:00, gets home about 6:00. Not many people around me.

If it were not for cooking, I would climb the walls. As you stated, cooking is therapy. It keeps me sane as well.

The days of large wedding receptions is over for now. I use to do 4 to 5 a month of 300 or more guest. Now, I’ve done two in the last 18 months.

Business has mostly been local markets on Saturdays. Turing out okay. People do like good food.

I’m working hard to not eat as a solution to isolation. Doing okay, but it is difficult. Letting go of of stress has helped, not only physically but emotionally as well. Trying to remember that forgiveness is critical in one’s personal growth. “Forgive me as I forgive others.” This last few months of Covid has definitely developed my spiritual growth.

Chef I wore a 30/30 pair of pants about 42 years ago when we got married & was proud of it & still am. However, after the first anniversary it was gone, gone forever. I still keep it as a goal & am proud of it, but you know, they say you can never go back!

When my wife was teaching it was mostly co-workers and stupid parents. Now it is almost solely stupid parents that make her question the profession
