Reasons to drive an old car

Well, I guess one step further back was my first car and an AM radio with just three bad stations on it. That made having an 8 track player and a couple decent speakers seem like pretty high living.

I can remember doing the big upgrade on my 73 Gran Torino from the 8 Track to a cassette. It may be hard to believe but cassette tapes were a technological advancement at one time. Man I wish I still had that car.

processhead My first vehicle just had AM radio and I remember installing an AM/FM with cassette and added some better speakers, man I was in tall cotton!

I can’t remember the exact age where having tunes became a major thing, but from that point on I have not been able to get by without a sound track to my life.

My Brother has a 73 Dodge Motorhome that he jams out to 8 tracks everytim he drives it. It came with a great collection!

I have a 2002 jeep TJ as a hobby/backup vehicle. We take it out to the mountains and when weather gets bad my wife drives my RAM and I drive this since her daily is frontwheel drive. The Jeep is incredibly simple to work on and enjoyable to maintain. I’ve learned a lot of simple maintenance skills since I’ve owned jeeps. I used to have a 1992 YJ. I bought it in Denver and owned it for about a year before turning a $3500 profit on it!!

I have a 2002 jeep TJ as a hobby/backup vehicle. We take it out to the mountains and when weather gets bad my wife drives my RAM and I drive this since her daily is frontwheel drive. The Jeep is incredibly simple to work on and enjoyable to maintain. I’ve learned a lot of simple maintenance skills since I’ve owned jeeps. I used to have a 1992 YJ. I bought it in Denver and owned it for about a year before turning a $3500 profit on it!!

bocephus now is not the time to either, I bought this one with 100K on the 4.0L 5spd about two years ago for $6K. I’ve put a little money in it but not much. Tires and a top basically. She’s all stock and unmolested otherwise. Jeeps like this, even with higher miles are bringing $15K all day right now. It is crazy.

@matt-westerhaus I owned a CJ2 if I remember correctly, a 1947. Vacuum wipers, I think it was a 4 speed. You couldn’t dent the body with a hammer. Been a lifetime ago, traded it for a full size blazer. Better plow vehicle and better heater. I did like the Jeep, but it just wasn’t up to plowing.

No electronic crap on my '36. I’m a Ford guy, but I made an exception when my buddy passed away. This was his father-in-laws and sat in a barn for a long time. My buddy started to restore it, but passed away before he got it donekyle My Dad had a 38 real similar to that when I was a real little kid & we lived on the farm. I was upset for a long time, even then at that age when he got rid of it for a newer model & we moved to town. That is beautiful!

GWG8541 I upgraded my 66 Belair SS with 396 to 8 track & then the 70 GTO Lemans. Thought I really had something with that 8 track & it was a dream compared to the 65 Biscayne with three on the column & basic AM/FM. Now, I am sadly back to the basic AM/FM. I like the stuff that comes out of Sirius (especially the Bluegrass station), but just cannot justify the price.

RafterW Finally broke down last year & sold my old jeep to a young man that has been begging me for it for years. For the most part just gave it away to pay for the new tires, etc. on it. Felt like I lost a left arm or at least a finger, but just got to where I did not have any time to enjoy it or work on it & it sat most of the time anymore. My sons were just not interested in that sort of thing like I always was. Life seems to really be changing. I like the old ones though the most. I like SIMPLE, HIGH QUALITY. Many of us all have a misunderstanding these days as to what high quality is. We think it is fancy, all to often. The old ones could be simple, high quality. They had parts & components that could be worked on & maintained. They were not so disposable. Don’t get me started.

calldoctoday agreed. Parts then were made to be rebuildable, not landfill. It is amazing how things these days are just made to be thrown away and certainly will not last nearly as long.

I have heard that too. My take on that is the software is kind of like the patents on GM parts.
You can use them but you can’t copy them to make and market your own parts, (or engine software). -
but the thing is the car will not run without their approval / software when you pay an high price to own all of it !

Well, they are easier to work on, the taxes on them are less, the insurance on them is often less, they are paid for, I don’t think they can be tracked as easily, let’s face it, you just like them, they don’t make em like that any more & they may be made in America for real, you want to be different & so does your truck, It’s personal (they’ve got a name), & now I suppose, reason #10, you actually own all of the parts on them.

The Rubicon started the craze to personalize and name your jeep. Over the years I’ve seen all sorts. I kindof think it’s silly to decal name your vehicle in a similar way that the factory did with the rubicon by decaling it where the “rubicon” would be. Well I got in on it in an ironic way, and to each their own m. If you feel like naming your jeep “punisher” well I guess that is your business. My Jeep is bone stock other than a front bumper and is the “sport” trim so I had some made up for the upcoming Jeep Night at Steerman Field.
