RJ Adventures Jonathon I agree, we need a cast iron group. I have learned so much about this wonderful material. I had several pieces but rarely used them. The community got me both using cast iron as well as adding to my collection. It is FANTASTIC. Cast iron is so versatile, and using it now in my catering. Works well on induction ranges. I’m now using the Smithey No. 8 for my breakfast made to order omelet station. I’ve used cast iron on my Primo now several times. I think it is time to share this wonderful tool.

Chef RJ Adventures You’re correct on the cast iron. The one’s that I can’t convert are the people who have electric glass ranges. They’re so versatile. It’s just another tool to get the job done.

zbigjeff it may be make and model specific, but my electric glass top works just fine. I grew up with a gas stove and would love to have one, but have to go with what I have. Just let those people know they are missing out.

I almost exclusively cook with CI, excluding my SS stock pots and kettles. I am looking to add for my outdoor/camp cooking. I need to get a couple of larger Dutch and Camp ovens.

YooperDog I really like my number 12 Lodge tall camp dutch oven. I make dump cakes or pineapple upside down cake in it mostly while camping. They are pretty versatile to anything you want though.

Peach Dump cake in a # 12 high wall Lodge Camp Dutch oven. Goes great with ice cream and super easy to do. Pour a can of peach (or whatever flavor you want) pie filling out on bottom of a greased dutch oven and spread out. Add a box of white or yellow cake mix sprinkled evenly on top of pie filling. Next add a can of sprite or 7 up. DO NOT STIR. Add a few pats of butter to the top. I do sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on the top if you want. Coals should be used for a 350 dutch oven. Rotate the bottom oven opposite that you rotate the lid every 15 minutes. Cook for approximately 45 minutes.

wdaly You can add two cans of pie filling if you want more fruit. There are lots of videos on YouTube for it too. It is great when out camping!

GWG8541 Chef @RJ Adventures Re: Glass tops. Oh, I agree with you that they work well. But, many of the people who have them are “very afraid” of scratching the surface. Changing the mind of a very afraid person is pointless. It’s their bad and sad for them. Except for stock pots and a couple sauce pots, I use one of the 10 CI items in the arsenal.

@ndmike thank you. The ones I have are either a bit to small or not deep enough. I was hoping to locate some via thrift/antique stores. Scored some great pieces at reasonable $. I guess I will need to take à look at a couple of Lodge items.

YooperDog Lodge is fairly cheap. There are videos out there that show how to use a sander to remove some of the grit on the pan to make them more smooth like old pieces. Cowboy Ken Rollins I believe has a video about doing this. I have some newer Lodge pans and they cook fine…just heavy compared to an old piece.

One thing I like about Lodge is they are still made in the USA. Tennessee I think.

@ndmike same here on the glass top, by the way, my Mom and Dad were originally from the Great State of Tennessee and I visit family a few times a year. I’ve been using Lodge in my collection for quite awhile. About 3 years ago I read an article that claimed to interview a source at Lodge and it said 80% of their products were still made in the USA. It never said what the 20% was or where it was made. It was my understanding that the CI was all still being poured at the foundries in South Pittsburg, TN. Over the years they have diversified to many products with their name on it, along with the CI cookware and I am guessing it may account for the 20 %. I love hitting the Lodge outlet stores in Pigeon Forge, TN when visiting.

zbigjeff my sister in law has a huge high dollar house with a kitchen most would love to have, but she barely cooks in it because she doesn’t want to “mess it up”. I just don’t get that concept. I mean she doesn’t even fry bacon because of the fried smell. Heck the range hood could be in a professional paint booth and they are worried about bacon smell. What normal person hates bacon???

GWG8541 yep I have been to that Outlet store in Pigeon Forge. I was flying home so I didn’t buy anything but had I been driving I would’ve dumped some $$$ there! Cool place!
