Here is a screen shot from a video I did. This is the front of it.
This is a picture of motor specs.
It has a 3 inch pulley on the motor. I want to change that to a 1 inch, but haven’t been able to find one.
The grinder has a 12 in pulley that comes with a handle for hand cranking. Took that off and run a v-belt from the hardware store.
Use a turn-buckle to tension the belt. And wired a light switch in line.

Chef Yeah. I dunno. Stopped watching and reading the “news” and turned off facebook back in June. A whole lot of misinformation and fear mongering. Started doing my own fact checking and devising my own plan based on those facts. Hopefully others have done the same.

pr0wlunwoof I agree, fact checking is important. Sad, can’s always do it with Google, they tend to give biased hits. Proved that to myself months ago. They promote their agenda. Haven’t really found a search engine to use that just is not biased.

Speaking of plans, they are really important and we’ve hamered it home time and time again on the podcast but having some plan for your meat supply is critical. I was pretty worried about all of this and then we had something happen near us, I laid out a plan with my wife on what we were going to do and slept like a baby that night. I just had to endure her looking at me like I was crazy for a few minutes, small price to pay for some additional security to both ourselves and our food!

Speaking of plans, they are really important and we’ve hamered it home time and time again on the podcast but having some plan for your meat supply is critical. I was pretty worried about all of this and then we had something happen near us, I laid out a plan with my wife on what we were going to do and slept like a baby that night. I just had to endure her looking at me like I was crazy for a few minutes, small price to pay for some additional security to both ourselves and our food!
Jonathon yeah with us being pregnant we had to make allot of plans. We have good friends and family to lean on and haven’t had to yet, but its definately not getting better before it gets worse. Id say we are lucky, but as much as we can we make our own luck. Allot of people don’t understand the basics of home economics, living within your means, and planning for the future. We had good upbringings I guess most aren’t as fortunate.

I bought a bicycle and rode into work for about 1.5 years and then bought a cheap old truck. This lets us save a certain % of our paychecks every month and not always be stressing about bills!

Jonathon It can be hard to make the right decision sometimes and very easy to make the wrong ones. We have been blessed to never really do without as we started our marriage with a good bit of savings and very little debt. We took care of the cars we had when we got married and even put a new engine in one as I refused to dish 25k out for a new car while I was still in school. I have watched a few family members and friends get behind and its so hard to come back from that.
Its funny while we were in the hospital I got to talking to one of the nurses and we are going to have some unforseen costs and she was trying to be empathetic. I finally explained to her that we have enough saved in our health savings account that we weren’t going to have any issues. Then we got into what an HSA was and about its many tax benefits. By the time she left she had taken notes to have a conversation with her husband to change some retirement planning.
Being well informed and doing research on everything you do is about the only way to stay ahead. I buy local allot and support businesses who I know have their priorities straight, but I also shop around on big ticket items and give those guys a chance to compete before I do something else. Allot of times that ends with me doing buisness elsewhere as they can’t sell at the same margin as other folks, but hopefully that gets them thinking about ways to cut costs and lower their margins.

I agree on shopping local when necessary, I always try to give local places a chance and if they are in the same prize range as amazon I will go for them instead but sadly Amazon wins more often than not! I was a mess when I met my wife, paycheck to paycheck and always behind. Luckily she is the smart one (I know that must be shocking huh?) and actually taught me a good amount about budgeting. I paid her back by telling her (and I kid you not) that the sun doesn’t go around the heart but we go around the sun! She says she knew it and just wasn’t thinking but come on!

Jonathon Yeah having kids has brought on a new perspective. This is our second and probably our last. One girl and one boy. If we had started earlier we might have had a third. My wife definately helped round me out and keep me grounded. We are totally different though. She can spend a whole weekend reading books while I gotta build-cook-fish-or go do something or I feel like I waisted my time.
Its funny her whole family can sit in a room reading and im watching this guy on YouTube make sausage and canadian bacon
. Then I ask them isnt that cool and their like what are you talking about. I’ve made believers out of them though. My father-in-law was an easy sell as he worked in delis after he retired and he knows how much better you can make things than take them out of a jar.
Glad I found you guys. I will be sticking around for a while. If ever I need some constructive criticism just let it roll. I give as good as I take. For instance I’m adding some safety devices to my grinder. Found a food funnel attachment so sticking fingers in the grinder isnt possible and adding a foot pedal switch. I’m going to try and find some plexi glass to help separate the work area and encapsulate the belt/pulley. Might end up mounting it differently. Possibly on a large cutting board to make cleanup easier. -

Jonathon I will make a separate post of the grinder to maybe help folks out. Honestly at this point in time building one would be about the same cost as buying a decent butcher model. A lot less hassle too.

pr0wlunwoof Jonathon I’ve concluded that I will have a manual grinder in case I loose power, but I agree, converting it just isn’t worth the investment, ESPECIALLY since we know we are SOON to get the Waltons meat grinder any day now…(okay Jon, I won’t hold my breath)

So we defrosted the last of the chicago bratz for dinner last night. The verdict is in. We must make more. So I have 2 butts sitting on the counter defrosting so I can debonair and slice them up to grind. Gonna do a 10lb batch of bratz and a 5lb batch of italian.
