My Alaska trip.

bocephus We lived large when I brought home about 200 lbs of halibut steaks about 1.5 inches thick and 150 lbs of salmon back in the day from my trip. The experts up there advised to soak it in milk, season it like a steak and grill it. They weren’t kidding. One of the best white steaks ever.
zbigjeff My brother in law used to go up every year and bring back halibut steaks, always looked forward to them.

So where to start? The first day was a super long day of travel. We flew from Fargo, ND to Chicago, Chicago to Seattle, Seattle to Anchorage. Spent about 10 hours on planes, I can’t remember how many layover hours, then a 3 hour drive from Anchorage to Kenai. We were pretty tired when we got there. The next day was a recover day hanging out at the cabins and visiting with the Alaskan guys I played football with.
The first adventure we did was fish for Halibut. We went out of Ninilchik. The seas were pretty rough we were in 6 foot rollers. On our boat 2 people got sick and on the other boat 4 people were sick. Both boats limited out but the Halibut were all small.
All in all a fun trip but also my least favorite thing we did. Part 2 will come tomorrow.ND Mike

ND Mike Better weather, water, and a Halibut over 50# may move it up favorites list. I am waiting for the drift on the Kasilof update. Typically a good King salmon run with the hatchery fish.

After we fished Halibut we did a float on the Kasilof River for King Salmon. We had reports that fishing had been poor and we were fishing the last day. They were closing the season at midnight. In our boat one guy caught two Kings but they were native born fish and not nursery fish so they had to be released. It was amazing how hard Kings fight. The guide said both fish were about 20 lb fish. Another guy had one on the line but it jumped out of the water and got off. I missed one when it bumped my lure. The float was beautiful and it was a very relaxing time. The guide really worked his butt off since he had 4 big guys in his boat. He joked that he should have ate his Wheaties before we left the put in.

ND Mike That is awesome! So, the fish get released? I am unfamiliar with salmon fishing, is it that they are going to spawn so the meat isn’t very good as they are dying at that point?

Jonathon I don’t know exactly for sure as this was my first time fishing salmon. I just know that a native (wild) born fish has to be released. The King population has been in decline for a while. But yes, the two Kings caught in our boat had to be released.

Jonathon They have a native and hatchery run Kings on the Kasilof. You can only keep the hatchery raised fish that have the adipose fin clipped. They let native fish go upriver to have the eggs stripped and hatch, then released for future generations. The king salmon fishery is very fragile.

ND Mike You need to plan and go again when the reds are running. That is a lot of fun hooking into them with a 9 or 10 weight fly rod. The Kasilof has a red run, although the fish are smaller than what you catch in the Kenai.

Spidey yeah I plan on making another trip up there sometime. One of my football buddies is a guide on the Kenai plus he has a boat for Halibut. He just had some family issues he was dealing with while we were up there.

Alaskan activity number 3 was the Kenai Fjords tour out of Seward on a big catamaran triple decker boat. First off the road into Seward is beautiful. The town is pretty cool too. We missed our first boat because the outfitter thought it left at 0830 but it left at 0800. We got there at 8 sharp just as the boat was leaving. It actually ended up being a good thing as we caught the 0900 boat which was a 7.5 hour tour. We saw three different groups of humpback whales (one did an amazing breach out of the water), a pod of killer whales, and lots of other smaller wildlife like porpoises, sea lions, and seals. The glaciers were pretty cool too. The pictures don’t show how deep blue they actually are! It was a great day!
