Dr_Pain This is the time for a real second line.

I put 52 quarts of Crawfish Étouffée in one of my small freezers. The freezer stopped working for some reason.

It all went bad. 24 Pounds of crawfish wasted. This is a sad day indeed.

Chef That really sucks, it always happens when you have a full load in it. I have been trying to empty my chest freezer of the accumulated meat and processing it. I noticed it was icing pretty badly and in need of a defrost. I’ve had one freezer fail and a refrigerator. The fridge was worse since it had homemade soda in it and I had exploded plastic bottles everywhere and soda all over the floor.

      Chef Sad day indeed.
I lost an upright freezer this summer (smoker project).
I was fortunate to notice a wet spot under it as things began to thaw. It didn’t fail entirely and was still cooling some. I was able to recover almost the entire contents.

I have been thinking about alarms as well. Most of the basic ones with a simple audible alarm are fairly inexpensive. and as long as your freezer is in an area where you can hear the alarm, they offer a pretty good measure of protection.

processhead I’m definitely going to need a wi-fi remote unit. I’m on two acres with many of my refrigeration units in my warehouse about 200 yards from my house.

With today’s technology, it should be just a matter of picking the right equipment.

That said, I would appreciate any input this great group has on this subject. Might just be a great issues for all of us.

Chef Sorry to hear about that. For most of us its a huge personal loss when a unit goes. For you and others, its your livelihood. Here’s to hoping your day gets better.

Chef No Cajun here either but I would rate properly boiled and very spicy crawfish in the top 10 of things I have eaten

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day
Teach a man to fish and he drinks beer for a lifetime

bocephus processhead johnsbrewhouse HerbcoFood GWG8541 glen Thanks guys, Yes, this was a very expensive loss. At $20.00 per quart, that was a $1000 loss of income, and about a $375.00 loss investment.

With the catering business dropping off the face of the earth with this pandemic, sales at farmer’s markets and surrounding communities has been the only thing to keep the bills paid.

I know that God is good and that somehow this is in his plan.

For all in the Meatgistics community, remember - support your local businesses. It is the local small business owners that keep this country running. That small $10.00 or so purchase just may be a huge part of feeding that family.

Chef sorry to hear about this loss. When the refrigeration alarms went off in the grocery stores I was working in anybody that knew what it meant was running for the compressor room. I’m sure someone here can come up with a wifi alert solution for you.

Being on 2 acres, you may need some wifi repeaters to give the wireless coverage you are after.
I know my home wifi won’t reach my outbuilding shop which is 100’ away.

Chef I have x3 freezers and x3 refrigerators. I use a monitor that will handle up to 8 senders and can be interfaced for remote wf and iphone w/alarms. A setup w 4 senders is apx $60 for the basic system. I think around $50 for the wf interface. Works well for me.

Chef That is terrible, my God, that is too great of a loss.
How long was the power down on it? A temp alarm would not be hard to set up & they can be fairly accurate & not too expensive at all. They should give you enough time to do something about the situation, before it is too late as your freezer should keep everything for a few days without power if it is not opened & the seal is working right.
I hope you can recover on this soon as that is a great loss & not cheap either.

Sorry for your loss! Check out the inkbird website. They make a lot of temperature sensors and controllers that I use for homebrewing. Many connect to wifi and will send text alerts at defined temperature set points. Some bluetooth versions cost less than $20. Thermoworks also carries similar type products.

HerbcoFood I guess I need to invest in a few alarm systems. Would likely pay itself off with one incident.

Do you have any personal experiences with temperature alarms? Any recommendations anyone?

That is a ton of crawfish, d**n that sucks, have you thought about getting alarms for your freezers? There are a ton out there too choose from.

We pay $14/lbs for cleaned crawfish. I felt the pay INSTANTANEOUSLY!! I can only imagine how much it is out of Louisiana
