ND Mike said in What are you hunting/fishing?:

calldoctoday check out Kibler Longrifles. His kits are top notch and the novice can build them. They are a high end kit that appeals to the historically accurate side. I’m going to build my 58 cal Colonial rifle this winter.

That should be a fun and useful project.
When I was in high school I got a Thomson-Center .50 caliber Hawken rifle kit for my birthday. I put it together in shop class, fitting, and finishing the stock and polishing and browning the metalwork. (good luck trying to do that in public school shop class today).

At the time, the movie Jeremiah Johnson had just come out in which the lead actor gets a Hawken rifle when he heads to the mountains. It also coincided with Nebraska opening a primitive weapon deer season. It was a fun to learn how to shoot and hunt with a traditional front-loader. Still have it and hunt with it today, although I also have an in-line .50 cal as well.

Nebraska gradually liberalized its "primitive " weapon deer season to where in-line percussion rifles and optics are all permitted. I am ok with it as it adds another excuse to get out with another weapon to deer hunt.

processhead I am not sure I could even graduate from prison today! I remember even in Jr. High shop we would have a Mountain Man thing every year. Some teachers, including myself were pretty serious about it & we had black powder, long knives, long bows, etc. However, there was nothing to worry about & everyone had the utmost respect for everyone else. Like to hear tell of that in the modern day prisons of today. On the other hand, I just feel like the in-lines & I think Knight was one of the first perhaps, are just too much like our regular rifles, in way too many ways. On the other hand, I hear the hunting rifle of the future is more like an assault rifle. I guess I have just become a dinosaur.

processhead Jeremiah Johnson is one of my all-time favorite movies! I used to do a lot of historical reenacting. Here is a photo of me and the State Shoot about 12 years ago.

calldoctoday I felt compelled to harvest a cull deer with my AR a few years ago just so I could say it’s hunting rifle.

We are not dinosaurs, we are renaissance men. lol

cdavis I noticed that. Come to think of it, I’ve never seen a mountain lion in the wild either. I’ve heard them and come across their tracks but never seen one.

This is the pic of a track I came across in MT. That is a 7mm Rem Mag shell for size comparison. This was a big kitty cat!

ND Mike yes sir that is a big track. Now one of those would get me on edge. I called one in while turkey hunting several years ago. He passed by me at 30 yards. I never took my gun off of him. He was huge and every hair on me was standing straight up.
