I know I need to work on heirloom seeds and growing heirloom vegetables well. (insect and disease control mainly).

There are some good freezedried food brands out there and there are some not so good ones. I keep stores of whole grain rice, its easy to pickup a 5lb bag once in a while at the grocery store and just throw them in with my other long term food stores. We keep a pretty good backstock of various canned goods in our pantry that we cycle in and out in no particular way.

I keep rice with freeze dried food for emergency use separate from my other pantry items. MaryJanesFarms makes quality freeze dried foodstuffs. It is also a good source for certain books. Written guides for various tasks that aren’t performed often are good to have on hand, as internet/electricity may not always be available. Things like wood working, metallurgy, welding, knot tying, sewing, medical processes like stitching wounds and proper care, general survival, plant/berry identification, mushroom identification are all good things to have hard copy instruction books in.

Can’t believe no one listed a backup generator and a drum of fuel.

processhead I’ve got two generators but am lacking in the fuel department…I’m considering a supplemental solar system and switching out fuel-based appliances to electric over much more investment in fuel storage. I am also in the process of adding wood heat/alternative cooking surfaces to our home.

simple tradable items are really good to have too, things that are convenience items. Seasonings, salt, flour, pepper, tp, even a bic lighter (you can get the normal or small sized ones in bulk packs) could really help you out in a situation where you may have thought of something that would make life easier for someone who didn’t think of it and has been without those “normal conveniences” for some time. IMO - money is much better spent when you are spending it diversely. That includes traditional and very nontraditional investments lol. Is it good to have some ammo, yeah sure, but it’s also good to think out of the box and think of trade items that don’t impact you ability to protect.

trade packets are also good ways to stretch things out. Consider putting prepackaged salt and pepper packets with some rice, dry beans, kindling and a lighter all together and vac seal it. It is a simple meal to go that you can make at home for pennies and would be a good trade item to keep on hand in a WROL situation for someone passing by.

Tradable items are a must! I would trade food, water, antibiotics etc… for bullets so I can hunt my food and fend off the “varmints”

Not just goods for trading, but skilled services. I am counting on some surgeon needing a meat smoker in exchange for repairing a hernia or broken wing. lol

When my oldest was making decisions to go to medical school he was bombarded by the inevitable question “So what are you gonna specialize in?” Obviously he didn’t know, but he had the presence of mind to open the conversation with me. My reply to him was “who do you think would be in great demand (as a MD discipline) in worse case scenario OR if you were to volunteer in 3rd world country doing medical mission work” His answer was my answer… any surgical practioners, so that is where he is headed.

Obviously a degree in underwater basket weaving would have been a close second.
