I think Oklahoma already has them and has a season on them.
The same article I mentioned earlier said that a domestic hog released into the wild and allowed to reproduce will revert back to a feral hog in only a couple of generations. Feral characteristics meaning, shaggy coat, tusks, and lean/rangy body type.

glen Wow, then if they are heavy in Nebraska, they will soon likely be as well in Kansas. Of course if the rules are right, spot or not, folks will hopefully keep them controlled.

First, oh my god! Second, I hear totally different things on feral hogs taste. Some say it is in the processing and some say doesn’t matter they are going to be nasty. 3rd, we’ve gotta figure out something? This might be one of the biggest land management issues of our day. The only thing that approaches it is CWD.

I don’t know about other parts of the country, but in southeast Texas, they are a big problem, destroying a lot of property. People actually pay to have then killed on their property. I’ve tried to process some meat, but frankly, I need to add so much domestics pork and fat that it is just not worth it. The flavor is very off taste.

I read an interesting article on the feral hog problem. One thing that I recall is game biologists discourage indiscriminate hunting of feral hogs because they are so smart that once they realize they are being hunted, they quickly become “educated” and very elusive and nocturnal.

Also something else to fight against is there is the market for hunting hogs. A lot of northerners come down to shoot feral hogs. So landowners are going against each other when it comes to trying get rid of them. I am glad there isn’t a season on them here and you can also hunt them at night.

zbigjeff they are starting to become a problem in South East Ohio. They may come north before you know it.

Jonathon I have heard smaller ones are a lot better eating, but man I don’t think I could pass up this monster and figure out how to cook it or make sausage. I have a friend who has a head mount with the tusks out and it is pretty impressive though not as big as this one.

HerbcoFood You are so right. Just an off flavor that I have never cared for. People want me to make sausage from their wild hogs, and the few times I made it, no one cared for it.
I have been told that the small females are okay, but never had the chance to try them. Maybe they would work.

Chef They do taste better, but there is always the issue with wild game, how was it handled in the field. But if I shoot a pig and it stinks from the get go, no matter the size I will recycle it back to Mother Nature.

HerbcoFood Sometimes you just have to recycle if the meat is bad but I always try to use what I shoot or catch. Sometimes though that is just not possible and in this case I think it is important to try and take these pests out as they are taking over some areas and doing an incredible amount of damage. Here in NM, I believe they brought in Gov. shooters to help eradicate them from the southeast.
