Gardening, canning, pickling and everything related

I remember getting sweet corn by the bushel and slicing off the cob for canning. We had a bunch of small Tupperware containers that were stacked in the freezer, I never thought I would do that again but I love the sweet corn that way in the winter. Also going to my uncles and processing chickens that he raised, plucked a lot of chickens with my brothers one Saturday in the fall.

craigrice my grandad died at 99. I can remember pulling up at his house in Tennessee when he was 90 and he was out in the August sun working the garden. I cant hold a candle to him or my dad. I lost Dad a year ago August 29th at 91 years. He was gardening until the end. I harvested his tomatoes last year and gave them to friends and family. I was lucky to have the family I have. Great parents, grandparents and many aunts and uncles that set the bar high.
GWG8541 I am very sorry to hear of that, but glad to hear that they both lived a wonderful life. We lost my last grandfather about 35years ago & my last grand mother who lived to be nearly 100 about 20 years ago. Both my parents have been gone in person now for many years as well. They just don’t make us like that any more, no matter how hard we try. Those folks were a whole lot of good things, all bundled up into one.

This is just from yesterday. Time for some cooking and canning. Had about the same amount of beans the day before.

The work begins

GWG8541 but its a fun kind of work. I did 9 qts of dill pickles this morning. Cucumbers are just starting. The wife has picked over 2 bushel of beans. We still have so many canned from last year, we are giving most away. Just eating what we can fresh, but making a lot of other people happy.

kyle I find it more a blessing to give than to receive.

I’m trying something different with my cabbage. Im trying a small batch of kraut with a gallon jar with a gas lock. Im just using salt and natural (lacto) fermentation. Hopefully it will work out. I plan on making some hot dogs soon and would love to have the kraut with them.

Chef AMEN! I learned that from my Dad. I really like giving fresh produce to the older folks that cant garden anymore. It seems to really brighten their day. Most cant’t afford the prices that are charged at the local farmers market, plus it gives me a chance to visit.

GWG8541 Those peppers look great. What kind are they? My wife likes peppered vinegar on her turnip greens. Would like to try some.

wdaly those are super chili’s. Just a little more heat than a regular chili pepper.

GWG8541 good for you, funny how little things can make someones day. Around northern Wi, tomatoes are selling for $1+ a pound.
kyle prices are a little high here also. I agree on giving to older friends and family. I also take a few jars to some of them, especially the ones who I know used to can their own and are no longer able. After my Mom passed I was looking through her recipe cards and found her Pasta Sauce recipe for canning. Mom wrote down the name of a family friend who the recipe came from. She is still alive and in her upper 80s. I make sure she gets some when I can her recipe and produce. I canned that sauce for a few decades, but had no idea where it came from until Mom passed. Its nice to pay it forward and that it has really come full circle.

Was given an antique honey extractor just in time for late summer harvest.

Derusted, painted, and coated with epoxy.

Had one really productive hive this year that I was able to split and still pull 6-7 gal of honey.

lkrfletcher this is my first time solo. My Mom has always been there to supervise. I didn’t attempt it last year after she passed, so baby steps.
