Been using Green Mountain Davey Crockett model for 8 years now. No problems. Temp. goes down to 150 which is lower than most I have seen.

150 degrees is considered low heat for a pellet grill?

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I’m going to look at the camp chef some more.

Hey curious which pellet smoker you ended up with if you got one? And are you happy with it? Was initially looking at the camp chef woodwind, recteq, and more recently the Yoder but still no where near decided on one.

Surg If your budget is in Yoder territory check out Pitts & Spitts Maverick 1250. They even make one with a sidebox that holds 100F less than main chamber so is perfect for hanging sausage, etc. I have a 1250 in full stainless as my main cooker for BBQ.

Surg haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I was going to go with the camp chef, but I’m concerned about winter. I’m in Michigan and smoke year round so I want to get something heavy with double wall insulation. At this point, I’m likely going to end up with a Traeger. The Ironwood or Timberline both offer good protection from the wind/cold

Deepwoodsbutcher At that price please take a look at a Pitts & Spitts Maverick 850 or 1250. I live in Chicago burbs and previously had 4 different Traeger. The P&S is so far above them in quality and have cooked in negative temps without any issues other than slightly higher pellet use. The steel on the P&S is ridiculously thick - once it gets heated up it doesn’t budge. I also have a thermal blanket made for it but you can also just use a welding blanket to help insulate (this goes for all smokers, not just P&S).

The P&S units do look awesome. I think I’m sold on them. May have to save up a little longer especially if I go for the 1250 , but seems like will be worth it. Definitely some solid metal on those things. Do you use it for grilling/searing too or do you have a separate grill for that?

                    Surg
Last fall I had my patio redone with two kitchen islands and a cedar pergola. One island has a Napoleon 700 Series gasser (first gasser in 20 years) the other my Maverick 1250 built-in (short legs and centered grease drain) and a Kamado Joe Big Joe 2. Since then I also added a PK100 that I wheel out just for sausage/jerky.

A pellet grill will never replace the sear you can get on charcoal or gas. Prior to patio I had a Traeger and a Weber Performer. Was tough giving up that Performer. I often do a reverse sear now from the P&S and then sear on gasser. You can get the “trap door” drip tray in P&S that exposes the firepot for searing but figured it was never going to live up to expectations.

Whatever pellet you get I highly recommended also having a Weber kettle of some sort for high heat.

If you want any more P&S info just let me know. Happy to talk more about one! But it is a beast of a machine for sure.

Jamieson22 Another option is the Sear Box attachment to a Woodwind from Camp Chef. it is what I use at home and I freaking love it!

Deepwoodsbutcher since you from Michigan take a look at Grilla Grills. Cool company and amazing customer service. They built their bottom half of the barrel with a double wall for cold weather cooks.

I started out with a Louisiana pellet, switched to Traeger. Both ended up at son-in-laws houses. They both worked fine, but… end up with a Yoder ys640s and I can say this’ll be the last one I’ll need
